The development of a primary care oral surgery model in the UK needs some serious movement. It is recognised by the four regional dental officers that well over 80% of oral surgery services can be delivered in primary care. The number of cases of avoidable deaths from dental sepsis continues to rise reflecting dental NHS systems failure. The issue of no standard primary care oral surgery service delivery model leading to secondary care oral surgery services being overwhelmed makes no sense financially or when looking through the lens of a patient centric solution.

Great to be back in Newcastle where I did my speciality training many moons ago. Very disappointed to hear from the four regional dental officers who all lacked vision, direction and a costed action plan on a ten year oral surgery service delivery strategy. Very concerning.
