Advances in technology offer transformative benefits for people with disabilities, enabling greater independence, accessibility, and inclusion. We have already seen incredible innovations with accessibility tools like screen readers and speech recognition software, mobility aids including advanced prosthetics and smart wheelchairs. With communication devices like augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, individuals with disabilities can access information, communicate effectively, and navigate their environments more easily. By leveraging technology, individuals with disabilities can overcome barriers and achieve greater autonomy and empowerment in their daily lives. #AssistiveTechnology #AI #AccessibilityInTheNews https://lnkd.in/gtXNBb2m

Thank you to Saminda Balasuriya our #HumanRobotInteraction postdoctoral fellow who spoke to the Centre this week on the topic "Co-designing robots with people with intellectual disabilities to support them in diverse contexts." The Human Robot Interaction program led by Laurianne Sitbon, Markus Rittenbruch and Jared Donovan is doing a lot of important work across #robotic #design and technologies for #disability. The "IEC 60601 Guy" | Medical Device Consultant | Product Safety Compliance & Regulatory | Evolving Medical Device Standards
This #robot could be life-changing to users with disabilities and their caregivers. More flexible, lower cost, easier to use for both - the user is working to design this so getting some amazing feedback for the design. They are working on making the robot more functional for both user types and reducing the cost below $20,000.00 over time. This is quite an amazing project and quite compelling to help both users as caregivers are so overwhelmed taking care of family members that they don't have time for themselves (I know from experience in the sandwich generation we live in of our generation). I see my mom and my in-laws experiencing all the time in the last couple of years - the strain and stress it takes on them. This robot could reduce the stress on the caretakers by allowing the person needing the care to do some of their own tasks they haven't been able to do is assisted by the robot and giving them more independence as well - wow - that is a game changer and provides the caretaker some room to breathe as well. What is your experience with this situation and what do you think about this potential from this article and the potential of this robot? https://lnkd.in/gUGNFYwb - Article from IEEE Spectrum titled "THIS ROBOT COULD BE THE KEY TO EMPOWERING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES"
