Tugs, barges, and ships are exposed to unique risks while transiting inland waterways, and the proper management of inland waterway transportation is vital for cargo safety and risk mitigation. Claims resulting from delays, salvage equipment costs, tugs, underwater surveys, etc., can be substantial, and the preparedness of equipment and vigilance/preparedness of mariners are crucial to preventing losses and mitigating exposure if an incident occurs.
The American P&I Club maintains an "Inland Waterways" webpage featuring best practices guidance documents that address ship anchoring and mooring considerations in U.S. rivers during high water conditions and barge fleeting area issues.
The page also links to the Club’s “Man Overboard” webpage, which comprises a range of media applications, including posters for use both on board and ashore and video animations.
