Yes, you read that right—attic fans! For Tommy, the attic fan is the highlight of the season. It’s more than just cooling down the house; the steady hum and airflow bring him a sense of calm and joy. The simple rhythm of the fan is something he looks forward to each year, and it reminds me of the importance of routine and sensory experiences in creating comfort. In our work advocating for autism and disability inclusion, we often focus on the big picture—creating accessible education, employment, and community spaces. But it's just as important to celebrate the little things that bring comfort and peace, whether it’s a favorite activity, sound, or tradition. Child following just one or a part of an instruction is a WIN. Child learning through play for 2 minutes, 5 minutes is a WIN. Daily living with autism, the small wins is our biggest victories. It doesn’t cross our minds what progress we are making as parents. We don’t see or feel what we do being a proud moment. Taking time just to reflect will give you the chance to see and feel what you have achieved. Allow yourself to accept the experience with your child is very worthy of a celebration. Celebrating your victories, will give you the courage to keep on going to work harder for you and your child. Whether is solely for you or for your child.
