🚨 New EU Methane Regulation: A Milestone in Climate Action 🌍 ............and yes it does apply to biogas plants The EU has taken a significant step forward in its climate agenda with the adoption of the new Methane Regulation (EU 2024/1787), effective from August 4, 2024. Here's what you need to know: 🔍 Key Measures: Enhanced Monitoring & Reporting: The regulation mandates rigorous measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of methane emissions across the energy sector, building on the OGMP 2.0 framework. This ensures accurate, independently verified data on methane emissions. Leak Detection & Repair (LDAR): Companies are required to frequently survey equipment and immediately repair any detected leaks, typically within 5 to 15 working days. Ban on Venting & Flaring: Routine venting and flaring of methane are now prohibited, with exceptions only for safety reasons when no other technical solutions are feasible. 🌐 Global Impact: By leveraging the OGMP 2.0 standards, the EU is setting a new benchmark for methane emission management, pushing for more direct measurements over estimates and driving global efforts to curb this potent greenhouse gas. 💡 Why It Matters: Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO2 in the short term. This regulation is crucial for meeting global climate goals and represents a major step towards a greener, more sustainable future. Biogas plants, fall under the scope of this regulation due to their potential methane emissions. The regulation's requirements for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of methane emissions, as well as the obligations regarding leak detection and repair (LDAR), are relevant to biogas facilities. However, the specifics of how these regulations apply to biogas plants might differ slightly from those applied to fossil fuel operations. The regulation acknowledges different sources and production processes, and biogas plants, in particular, may have additional or alternative requirements to account for the unique nature of their emissions and operations Image from - https://lnkd.in/epxBsXWh #EUClimateAction #MethaneRegulation #Sustainability #OGMP2.0 #EnergySector #ClimateChange #GreenDeal #biogas #biomethane
