As part of Intelligent Insurer's Talent Month series, Sue Davies participated in a panel with other human resources leaders in the insurance industry. This first report focuses on strategies to attract more of the right people. Sue spoke about the importance of effective marketing to attract the right talent. “The sector generally is continuing to up our game on marketing careers in insurance,” she said. “The sheer diversity of career opportunities that exist, and the importance of everything we do, make this where we can all continue to raise the game.” Sue also suggested breaking away from tradition when appealing to new talent pools. She cited Markel’s recruitment program for veterans and individuals returning from career breaks as examples of innovative recruitment strategies and emphasized retention. “We can’t take our eyes off the prize in terms of continuing to make sure we’re developing our internal talent pipeline,” she added. We're glad we joined two Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation Regional Forums this June. Orly Nosrati spoke on a panel in Los Angeles, CA about interweaving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging into the everyday and Jamie Carsey participated in a session in Dallas, TX about her career story. Proceeds from the events benefitted IICF nonprofit partners and neighbors in need through the IICF Community Grants Program.

As Pride Month comes to an end, we're looking forward to a hands-on opportunity with the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity. Markel is proud to be a sponsor of this year’s PRIDE Build, which will begin mid-summer and continue through the fall. Once assigned a build day, professionals will guide our employee volunteers through some work on a home, which will then be given to a family in need. Members of PRISM, our LGBTQ employee-led resource group, attended a Habitat for Humanity kick-off event yesterday to build excitement for this chance to give back to the community. We kicked off our 2024 Richmond Summer Event Series in the perfect way — by celebrating our recent Top Workplaces recognition! We’re happy to have been honored for the second year in a row, thanks to our people-powered culture and dedicated employees. Our President Jeremy Noble shared, “It’s incredibly gratifying to have received the acknowledgment as a Top Workplace in Richmond the past two years.
