Our monthly analysis comparing the prices of popular groceries at eight major supermarkets, now includes loyalty scheme prices. Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: 'As member-only pricing continues to grow, Which? believes the sector needs to be properly scrutinised and held to account so that all shoppers - including society’s most vulnerable - can benefit, and no one is misled into believing they’re getting a better deal than they really are. With food prices continuing to squeeze household budgets, it comes as no surprise that many people are choosing to shop with the discounters. Our analysis shows that Aldi and Lidl are still cheaper than the traditional supermarkets, even when you include loyalty pricing.' #CostOfLiving #ConsumerRights

This comparison has shown that even a small price difference can influence customer loyalty and buying habits. The shift towards digital platforms not only benefits consumers but challenges businesses to continuously offer value and convenience. It’s crucial to understand these dynamics as businesses navigate the changing retail environment in South Africa.
BusinessTech recently compared prices for sandwich ingredients across major South African retailers: Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, and Shoprite. With Shoprite coming out as the most affordable and Checkers the priciest, the competition remains tight, with only a 5% difference between the cheapest and most expensive baskets. 🏷️💰 As online grocery shopping continues to rise, so does the ease of price comparisons — making it critical for retailers to stay competitive. Customers clicking-off online grocery shopping? The crowds at my local Sainbury’s can attest to this. The weird substitutes and poor dates on food may have been funny memes on social media. But in a post-pandemic world, when you want to get the most for your money, you'll take a trip in-store. Even with WFH, we can't take random deliveries to the door during a meeting. We are tired of being told something is in stock to only find out it isn't, on the day of delivery. And if you are on the top floor of a building, good luck getting the deliveries to your floor. We are hunter-gatherers at our core. We enjoy seeking out bargains and discovering new tastes and flavours. So for anyone in retail, please tap into this. People revert to online when they are tired of not finding what they need on the high street. But when retailers listen to customers and offer a broad range of goods and services. Footfall will return. Sainsbury has been canny with integrations with Argos and clothing categories. Their Nectar program has a wide range of other retailers to earn points on. Something Tesco might consider. #retail #retailnews #ecomm #ecommerce #groceries #bricksandmortar #consumerbehaviour #shoppinghabits #food #grocerytrade #online #highstreet #consumertrends https://lnkd.in/eNDFMsWC

While shopping the specials at both Woolworths and Coles can save you money, the question remains: what is the real price of our groceries? Both retailers offer alternating weekly specials, making it beneficial to compare and shop accordingly. In the competitive landscape of Australian supermarkets, IGA has struggled due to a top-heavy business model and the cost of supporting poor operators. However, some independent stores have managed to compete effectively with Woolworths and Coles by excelling in product sourcing—buying right to sell right. Aldi, on the other hand, operates with low overheads, a limited range, and no-frills service, which allows them to offer lower prices. Unlike Woolworths and Coles, which are driven by shareholder returns, Aldi’s profits go back overseas, impacting the local economy. In summary, while the major players each have their strategies, independent operators who focus on smart buying can still compete successfully in this challenging market.

A Choice survey on supermarket prices for a basket of key items had Aldi as cheapest grocer on this particular surveyed basket of goods. (see attached article) While the "validity/accuracy "of such a check can always be questioned, assuming this survey is accurate, the biggest issue is the position of the independents on this Choice survey. The Independents (IGA banner group) have a key role to play in our retail supermarket industry (for suppliers and shoppers). It's never been more critical for the independent operators to come together and align to improve their value offer. #Supermarkets #Choicepricesurvey #Aldicheapest #Independentchallenge #improvedpricingoffer #topdownreview

Consumer group CHOICE has released its first quarterly, government-funded report on supermarket prices across Australia. The research reveals that ALDI has the cheapest groceries nationwide, with a comparable basket from the retailer about 25 per cent cheaper than at Coles or Woolworths. As part of the research, CHOICE sent mystery shoppers to 81 regional and metropolitan supermarkets across the country, including ALDI, Woolworths, and Coles, to record prices for 14 common grocery items. In addition to determining the retailer with the cheapest prices, the research also found where people live can make a difference when it comes to the cost of groceries. An accountant with a knack for cracking tough financial problems | Literally a numbers black belt | Probably the leading accountant in blueberry muffin and coffee consumption 😊
Want to slash your grocery bill? Drop down a supermarket level! It’s wild how much more you spend at fancy stores. My wife loves to ‘pop to Waitrose’ for milk. She says ‘pop,’ but it’s more like she’s raiding the place—comes back with a vanload that lasts a day. If you shop at Waitrose, try Sainsbury’s. From Sainsbury’s, go to Tesco. Or be bold and hit Lidl or Aldi (if you spot my wife there, she’s probably up to no good, so do tell me). Which? found Waitrose to be the priciest supermarket, costing £6-10 more a month for the same items—up to £120 a year! Reduce your food waste, and you could save even more—the average household chucks away £700 of food annually. For serious savings, buy in bulk at Costco or Cash & Carry and skip the big-name brands. The average household spends £5,356 a year on food, but buying wholesale could save you £1,606. Shopping online? Even better! No impulse buys or sneaky upsells, which saves you time and money. And don’t forget to use cashback sites for a little extra cash in your pocket. Happy saving!

Aldi stores help keep prices down at Coles, Woolworths Shoppers have been able to slash their grocery bills by a quarter by ditching the major supermarkets, a report has found, but those in Tasmania and the Northern Territory will miss out on the chance. Research from consumer group Choice found that Aldi had the lowest prices of the major supermarkets for a basket of average goods. An average basket of 14 common household items from Aldi cost $51.51 compared to $68.58 at Woolworths and $69.33 at Coles. Which supermarket has the cheapest groceries? We investigate prices at Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA to see which chain offers the biggest savings: https://t.co/KiBwP3UtbQ pic.twitter.com/q3y8cZCKDy — CHOICE (@choiceaustralia) June 20, 2024 The report said the lack of Aldi stores in Tasmania and the NT contributed to higher average grocery prices in those jurisdictions. Shoppers in Tasmania paid $68.90 on average for the basket of goods, while those in the NT paid $68.82. On https://lnkd.in/gVk5pDkY
