New kid in the global Ocean #BestPractices System - European #datapolicy as implementation of data policy and terms of use adopted by UNESCO Ocean in 2023 📃 🌐 🌊 We have just released it today in the OBPS - repository of community practices in ocean research, applications, and data and information management coordinated by Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) & UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE, under CC BY license and available to all: https://lnkd.in/eVbmfCzf In recent years, several international organizations have revised their data policies to emphasize the importance of timely and unrestricted exchange of #oceanographic and #meteorological #data. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) - UNESCO Ocean, European Open Data Directive - European Commission, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), and Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) have all adopted new policies aimed at promoting open access to essential environmental data. These policies prioritize the free exchange of core data to facilitate scientific research and informed decision-making regarding #ocean and #climate-related issues. At #EuroGOOS, we have introduced a European policy that mandates our member organizations to openly share core ocean data in accordance with the #FAIR principles and transparent licensing agreements. This commitment encompasses essential physical and biogeochemical ocean variables (#EOVs) required for the Copernicus Marine Service, EuroGOOS Regional Operational Oceanographic Systems (ROOS), including coastal services, as well as the services delivered by European Marine Observation and Data Network EMODnet. The ocean is a complex dynamical system with high variation across many time and space scales. Capturing all this change with sufficient resolution is key to a deep understanding of ocean, weather, and climate processes. While temporal resolution is great nowadays, getting sufficient spatial resolution is still a major challenge. Until recently, only major research initiatives and governments had the capacity to operate large marine sensor networks. Now a growing number of research and commercial projects are deploying networks of marine sensing systems. These networks enable unprecedented spatial data density, without the huge financial resources normally associated with such projects. Even modest research grants can be enough. Sofar's white paper below provides an in-depth look at a few of these projects. https://lnkd.in/gijDpm3F

Our new data policy has been released in the global Ocean Best Practices System: https://lnkd.in/d6DUKsm2. This policy is the European implementation of the UNESCO-IOC Data Policy and Terms of Use adopted in 2023. It requires our members’ commitment to share core #oceandata openly according to the #FAIR principles and clear licences. By core in situ ocean data we mean, at least, the physical and biogeochemical Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) which are necessary for the Copernicus Marine_Service and the EuroGOOS Regional Operational Oceanographic Systems (ROOS), including coastal services, as well as the services delivered by the European Marine Observation and Data Network EMODnet. We will be promoting a wide use of this policy across Europe, among the EuroGOOS community and beyond!

Our #Copernicus Ocean State Report (OSR) is now recognised as an action under the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” Charter. Not only does it act as a reference for the scientific community but it is also used as an assessment tool for major scientific and governmental entities. This highlights the role of the #CopernicusMarine Service 🌊 in fulfilling the objectives of the Restore our Ocean and Waters initiative and providing essential data, such as sea surface temperature, sea level variations, and ocean currents, to scientists, the #BlueEconomy, decision-makers, and the public. 💧🌍 Water is rapidly becoming an increasingly critical resource. Climate change, increasing populations and growing urbanisation and deforestation are all putting pressure on the globe’s water resources. WorldWater is a pioneering project that applies satellite image analyses and tools to offer accurate and detailed monitoring of surface water dynamics. WorldWater is funded by European Space Agency - ESA, and DHI´s partners in the project are Gisat, GeoVille Information Systems and Data Processing GmbH, DTU - Technical University of Denmark and GRID-Arendal. 🛰️📊 🌊The ultimate aim of the project is to enable decision-makers and river basin authorities to gain more accurate and detailed information about the development of vulnerable water bodies so that they can implement effective measures for water body management and protection. The partners recently met in Rome to discuss what’s next in mapping surface water dynamics from space. Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/edtUD9m
