Conference: 1st European Science Diplomacy. European Commission. Given the rapidly evolving geopolitical and scientific-technological landscape, Europe needs to act strategically and develop an ambitious European framework for science diplomacy. This framework should build on the legacy of European science diplomacy and the number of existing activities and initiatives at EU level and in Member States. This framework should harness the expertise and skills of the fast-growing community of European science diplomacy scholars and practitioners. This framework should identify synergies and maximise the EU-added value of collaborative action, including through appropriate linkages between research and foreign policy instruments, creating spaces for interaction between the scientific and diplomatic communities. This framework should re-imagine European science diplomacy in a fragmented, multipolar world and reflect on its use as a soft and as a hard power, based on the concept of being as open as possible, but as closed as necessary. This framework should reflect on how European diplomacy can become more strategic, effective, and resilient through the use of scientific evidence and foresight, including by enabling diplomacy to deal with the opportunities and risks of disruptive technologies. The World Science Diplomacy Summit, organized by @SciTechDiploHub and moderated by Martí Jiménez Mausbach, featured a compelling panel discussion on #ScienceDiplomacy for Social Progress. During the discussion, I highlighted : 📍 The importance of understanding the historical flows of knowledge, to foster a more nuanced approach to Science Diplomacy. 📍 Pakistan’s strategic role in the global science diplomacy landscape. 📍 The pivotal role of emerging technologies in shaping our future and leveraging science as a tool for socio-economic development. It was an enriching experience to exchange ideas with esteemed panelists, including Dr. Neema Balolebwami Nelly and Dr. Meri Rosich, and explore how science diplomacy can drive social progress. The Summit provided a timely opportunity for diverse stakeholders from the realms of diplomacy and science to gather, share ideas, and co-create pathways for international collaboration. Given the complex challenges we face today, it is crucial to strengthen frameworks like science diplomacy to foster global solutions. Congratulations to SciTech DiploHub for organizing an outstanding event. #Diplomacy #ScienceAndTechnology #SocialProgress #Innovation #Pakistan #GlobalEngagement #EmergingTech #ScienceDiplomacy

Inspiring and motivating discussions at the first European Science Diplomacy Conference on December 18-19 in Madrid. An event organised by the Spanish Presidency of the European Council (EU2023ES), the European Commission and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Thanks for the invitation and the possibility to follow the discussions remotely and congrats for the fascinating programme and fruitful exchanges. A lot of things done, ongoing and to be done in term of training (of both scientists and diplomats) and capacity buinding, within the framework for European science diplomacy - in order to strengthen the EU’s outreach, resilience and capacity to enhance the impact of the EU’s actions at the global level. #science #diplomacy #HorizonEU #EUfunding #EUSciDipMadrid.

Building #Wearescience. A non-scientist with a new Philosophy and Sociology of Science. TRAINER of Conversational Science Communication for Science for Personal and Professional life.
https://lnkd.in/gKVzuBTw ABSTRACT In this paper, we discuss whether Latin American researchers participate in the European Research and Innovation Framework Programme (FP) by joining European colleagues as peers, or by being targeted as part of a science diplomacy initiative. We analyse the participation of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico (LAC) in the 7th (2007–2013) and 8th (2014–2020) programs, based on CORDIS data and the Open Aire repository. We determine the scope of these countries’ participation and the variables that intervene. Results show that funding received by LAC organizations decreased significantly from the 7th to the 8th FP due to an increase in projects with no EU monetary contribution. Co-authoring with European partners or by domestic authors in publications issued from these projects by LAC researchers represented an average 12% of all publications in both FPs, and it was marginal in some projects and decisive in others, depending on the topic of research. We conclude that the participation of these countries due to EU science diplomacy actions was important in the 7th FP and less so in H2020 and that this involvement has become less dependent on their being targeted as a region, or by Spain’s brokerage as coordinator.
