After 20 years we are celebrating Spark and reflecting on what has contributed to our success. Two heads are better than one. Seems like a common-sense adage except when the accepted consulting framework is that each partner manages separate clients and owns those relationships. From the get-go, we chose to ignore this framework, not out of arrogance, but from a deeply felt, shared conviction that the guiding principle of our partnership was for each of us to feel we owned 100% of Spark, not 50% of the business. For the first 15 years of Spark as marketing strategy consultants, this principle guided the way we showed up for our clients and each other. Working together on every project allowed us to go further for our clients. We leveraged our different perspectives and approaches to explore more options and collect more information and in doing so provide more creative, effective solutions. We abolished power plays and silos and maximized our own personal flexibility. If one of us was unavailable - the other was always up to speed. We have taken this same approach in building our Executive Coaching business over the last five years. While maintaining client confidentiality we push each other to think more creatively about how to help our clients achieve their goals. Sometimes when you start a business where existing frameworks exist, it is tempting to adopt that framework as your starting point. For us, we have found greater fulfillment and success from asking ourselves what we really want. What you want personally, what do want for your partner, for clients and for the organisation overall. Together we crafted Spark and we feel so fortunate that we did. Once again proving that two heads really are better than one!
