I am joined by Tony Musto, Brightview's Regional Director of Operations. We discuss how Brightview is vastly different from any Senior Living options on the market. They are a Community, not a Facility. The whole ethos of the company is to give you not only a place to call home, but a place where you can lay roots and build a life for yourself in your later years. Brightview also offers a true Independent Living option for residents. In the residential side of the Community, you are free to live how you want, come and go as you please, cook for yourself in the full kitchen found in each unit, as well as go to work and live your life as you would have outside of the campus. Even in the Assisted Living portion of the Community, your independence is placed at the forefront of Brightview's services. If you cannot go as you please do to physical limitations, there are ample staff and communal trips for you to still be a participant in the outside world. The Dementia Care portion of the Community also provides as much independence as the patient can handle, yet still maintains the high level of care and attention needed for those suffering from Dementia. Well that’s me 2 weeks into the job at Abbeyfield & Wesley - NI already. My overriding observation is that there’s no “one size fits all” for older people’s housing. The Department for Communities categorises older people’s housing as starting at 55, but our oldest resident is thriving at 107 - a 52yr difference within one housing “category”. A lot changes in those 52 years and that’s why the Abbeyfield & Wesley model works so well. We have housing options that recognise older people’s needs change over time - we want to help maintain independence as far as possible and combat loneliness - but that is not necessarily best done by remaining in your own home as long as possible. This is why we provide over-55s housing, sheltered housing and supported sheltered housing as well as specialist dementia care.

As Executive Director for Metropolitan Center for Independent Living, it is my honor to share with you a co-cover article I was asked to write for MINNESOTA PHYSICIAN, the Nov. 2023 journal edition. It is entitled "A Crisis in Home Health Direct Care - The Minnesota Solutions Model." Across the United States and in Minnesota, we are experiencing an urgent severe crisis in direct care Personal Care Assistant/Direct Support Professional services. This crisis is becoming the #1 civil rights issue for people with disabilities and older adults who rely upon direct care services and benefits for daily living. The article identifies the solutions as a way out of the crisis that will require The White House, Congress, the 50 states and all of us to work together.
