Hello Co Wicklow, it's Pat Casey here, and I've got some fantastic news to share with you. The Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage just released their monthly data for December 2023, and it's all about the number of Commencement Notices for new homes. Now, let me break it down for you.
Between January and December 2023, our Building Control Authorities received a whopping 32,801 Commencement Notices for new homes. And here's the start—it's the highest number of annual commencements on record, a remarkable 21.7% increase compared to 2022. We're talking about history in the making, the highest number of residential commencements since we started keeping records back in 2014.
Now, why does this matter? Well, it's simple. Supply is the key to tackling our housing challenges, and this data shows the real progress Fianna Fáil in Government is making. In 2023 alone, 32,801 new homes got the green light, setting a record that we can all be proud of. December saw a massive 76% increase compared to the same month in 2022, with 3,167 Commencement Notices received.
And for our friends here in Wicklow, listen to this – 1,490 homes kicked off construction last year, a solid 31% jump from 2022. That's progress we can see and feel in our own community.
Now, all the important indicators—commencements, completions, and planning permissions—are trending upward, and that's a promising sign for the future. Our top priority at Fianna Fáil is making sure everyone can afford a place to call home, and these figures show our plan is working.
I'm thrilled to be part of this positive momentum, and I'm committed to keeping it going. Thanks for your support, and let's keep moving forward together!
