Two years ago, I typed a short blog as I dipped my toes into the world of blogging. Looking back, it's quite a reflection, as I had no idea that the next two years would be dedicated to exploring these concepts as part of my studies. Back then, I was a novice, and Imposter Syndrome kept me from promoting my blog on LinkedIn. Over the past two years, I've come to understand that sharing the lessons learned and the mistakes made during my journey into the world of cybersecurity can benefit those who are just starting. So, my blog entries remained parked, but now, I'm excited to announce that I'll be releasing them as posts on LinkedIn. I'll also provide updates on where my current knowledge stands in relation to the aspirations I had in 2021. Being part of Journeys to Inspire has underscored the importance of sharing experiences and best practices. You never know whose life you might impact for the greater good by sharing your journey. On a related note, I'm currently undertaking second-level undergraduate Computer Science modules, and one of the key areas I'm exploring is Computer Organization. Understanding computers and lower-level processes is incredibly beneficial in comprehending what computer attacks aim to achieve at a deeper level. This knowledge is proving invaluable in my journey in the field of Penetration Testing. 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲! On June 4, 2024, I successfully presented my bachelor's thesis titled “Network Anomaly Detection System Using Machine Learning.” This presentation marked the completion of my degree requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Security. My study focused on the power of machine learning to improve network anomaly detection. Machine learning can handle large amounts of data, find hidden patterns, and detect anomalies with high accuracy. However, it also faces challenges like the need for a lot of training data and the risk of false positives. Despite these challenges, the benefits are clear. I evaluated five different machine learning models using Jupyter Notebook, explored the difficulties detection systems face, and identified best practices for managing network alerts. Each model helped show the importance of anomaly detection and how it contributes to a strong cybersecurity framework. The journey to this achievement was filled with extensive research, countless hours of coding, and valuable learning experiences. I am grateful for the support and encouragement from my peers and mentors throughout this process. Excited to use these insights in real-world situations and continue my path in cybersecurity!

I am thrilled to announce the completion of my thesis at UCL, as part of my Master's in Information Security, under the guidance of Prof. Emiliano De Cristofaro. Machine Learning is everywhere today, aiding in various decision-making models. The advent of Federated Learning (FL) enables users to contribute to learning, ensuring their data remains private and local. However, this dissertation delves into a critical concern—what if participants act maliciously to compromise the model? In this work, I explored Data Poisoning Attacks, showcasing their severity on FL models, implementing and launching several examples, and studying their implications. After examining existing defense strategies, I’ve identified and proposed a new set of algorithms aimed at predicting and eliminating malicious participants from contributing to FL models, ensuring participant privacy and product utility. This work encapsulates observing vulnerabilities, confirming them through practical attacks, proposing mitigating solutions, and presenting results contributing to the community's goal of eliminating such attacks. Excitingly, we are in the process of working towards publishing this research, contributing further to the discourse on securing Federated Learning against Data Poisoning attacks. 🎉 Thrilled to announce that our conference paper on leveraging the Cognitive Continuum Theory (CCT) in The Baldwin School "Cybersecurity and Ethical Hacking" class has been accepted! The paper will be included in the "Cybersecurity Education" track of the European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security (ECCWS). Through a case-study analysis of 104 tasks across six activities, our study explores how various task characteristics induce CCT's diverse cognitive modes—Analytical, Quasi-Rational, and Intuitive Cognition. Analytical Cognition emphasizes in-depth analysis, Intuitive Cognition leans on intuition, and Quasi-Rational Cognition blends both approaches. By tailoring cybersecurity class activities to engage these cognitive modes, we aim to equip students with the nuanced decision-making skills needed for the complex cybersecurity landscape.
