The #EV revolution is well underway, and we’re clearly in the midst of a massive transition away from gas-powered cars. Consumers are opting for EVs not only to end their costly dependency on fossil fuels, but also because EVs are often just better cars. For fleet managers, the calculus is different and more challenging. Switching to EVs requires not just an upfront investment, but also operational changes to deal with charging. This is an important problem to solve given the vast number of intensively-used, fleet-owned vehicles on the road. We’re joined today on Invested in Climate by Tenni Theurer, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Spring Free EV, a startup that provides EVs as a service to fleet managers across the US, as well as one of her investors, Rob Day, Partner and Co-Founder at Spring Lane Capital. More great news for the environment and London commuters as Stagecoach London have ordered another 16 state-of-the-art zero-emission vehicles from Wrightbus.   "We have the climate and the technology to drive fundamental change in the energy sector, and position ourselves as a world-leader in delivering zero-emission buses. This latest order represents another significant step and we are proud to work alongside Stagecoach to achieve these goals.” Jean-Marc Gales CEO   The battery electric double deck buses will be rolled out across the capital and supports Stagecoach’s strategy to have a zero-emission bus fleet across all of its operations by 2035. Sam Greer, Chief Operating Officer for Stagecoach, said: "We're proud to be working with Wrightbus in bringing this exciting technology to the streets of London, as we target a fully zero-emissions vehicle fleet." 💡This week, the European Commission has issued its public consultation on Greening Corporate Fleets. The consultation explores a range of measures that will accelerate the greening of corporate fleets. ✔Leaseurope firmly believes that a comprehensive strategy, encompassing policy, regulation, fiscal support, funding mechanisms, and incentive-driven measures, is pivotal for a successful and seamless transition. 🔄 A holistic approach is imperative, addressing challenges such as vehicle availability, affordability, charging infrastructure, grid capacity, and diverse customer needs across businesses in the EU27. Our focus is on stimulating interest in new vehicles, fostering the development of an efficient used electric vehicle market, and embracing multi-cycle leasing within a circular economy framework. 👏We applaud the EU's decision to end new sales of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powertrains by 2035, setting a clear target for the industry. This milestone enables us to align EV availability with sector demand and emphasizes the need for parallel development of charging infrastructure. Achieving equilibrium in these aspects requires a delicate balance of market dynamics, supported by well-crafted policy, taxation, funding, and operational incentives. ❗❗ However, we caution against the imposition of arbitrarily set mandatory fleet targets, which may lead to unintended consequences, including the retention of ICE vehicles. Such regulations could be counterproductive to the EU's vital goals of reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. 📈 Leaseurope members are voluntarily ahead of the market in most cases in terms of electrification. Our members are well-prepared to bring electromobility to a broader audience, but this necessitates a stable, predictable, and supportive framework in terms of policy, fiscal measures, funding, operations, and demand incentives. Getting a greener Britain moving means getting the full spectrum of jobs that society and economy needs delivered by zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). From the household car and business van to whole fleets of trucks and buses, the entire road transport fleet must be decarbonised and industry is already doing all it can to deliver. SMMT’s latest figures, published this week, show just that, with rising rollout of the very greenest and biggest vehicles on our roads. An uptick in demand for zero emission HGVs in the first quarter of 2024 saw operator demand rise by half, growth driven by manufacturer investment in cutting-edge, innovative products, new production lines, new skills and jobs. All major truck makers in Britain now have highly competitive electric model offerings, crucial given operators are typically loyal to their existing vehicle brand and will therefore now find zero emission alternatives upon renewing their fleet. Green uptake still represents just half a percent of the whole market, however, and the onus is on wider stakeholder support for the truck transition. HGV-dedicated public charging infrastructure is fundamental, as is a grant system that is fit for purpose, with a need for the level of incentive to be on par with other major European markets. Green Ambitions on a Yellow Brick Road: The Slow March of EV Adoption in Germany and France 🤔💬 Oh, the saga of EV adoption in Germany and France! It's like watching a slow-motion thriller where the protagonists, despite having the tools and the stage set for a grand performance, can't seem to get their act together. Germany, with its storied automotive heritage, somehow manages to simultaneously lead and lag in the e-mobility race. While they boast a 37% EV sales penetration, higher than the global average, the hesitations in automotive manufacturing and the underwhelming expansion of charging infrastructures give competitors like Tesla a runway to zoom past them. Meanwhile, France tries to play the knight in shining armor with its 'Buy European Act,' championing subsidies only for EVs that whisper "Made in Europe" in every component. Yet, here too, the pace feels more like a leisurely stroll than a revolutionary sprint. The French strategy includes shifting subsidies to prioritize local production and reduce reliance on non-European industrialization, aiming to curb the flow of taxpayer euros towards foreign EVs. And let's not ignore the elephant in the room: lobbying. Oh, the lobbying! It's like a sport in the EU, with Brussels being a close second to Washington DC in lobbying activities. Despite efforts towards transparency and regulation, lobbying remains a less-than-transparent influence on EV policies. So, as Germany and France attempt to navigate the EV transition with a mix of ambition and what appears to be strategic confusion, one can't help but wonder if they'll manage to shift gears in time or if they'll be left in the dust of their own regulations and cautious progress. Sweden's First Electrified Highway OPENS up !!! Revolutionizing Electric Vehicle Charging! ⚡🚗 Sweden is setting a remarkable precedent with plans to construct the world’s first permanent electrified motorway, redefining the way electric cars recharge while on the move. This groundbreaking initiative involves converting a 13-mile stretch of the E20 motorway, connecting major cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, into an e-motorway.
