A French startup, SilMach, based in Besançon, is pioneering a significant advancement in analog wristwatch technology. Traditionally dominated by quartz watches, which account for nearly three-quarters of the conventional wristwatch market, SilMach has leveraged silicon microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to create a new wristwatch motor. This innovative motor is half the size and approximately three times more efficient than the standard stepper motor commonly used in analog watches. Despite the prevalence of smartwatches in the current tech era, the market for analog quartz wristwatches remains substantial, valued at $66 billion, slightly surpassing the global smartwatch market. SilMach's breakthrough comes as a response to the lack of technological evolution in analog quartz watches since their introduction 53 years ago. The journey began in 1996 when French engineer Patrice Minotti envisioned using silicon MEMS to revolutionize watch motors. The team at SilMach adopted the comb drive MEMS actuator, where electrostatic forces between interleaved combs induce rotational motion. Overcoming challenges such as the need for 2,000 combs to generate sufficient torque and the development of circuitry for battery conversion, SilMach's MEMS motor achieved compactness and efficiency. In 2016, SilMach formed a joint venture, TiMach, with Timex Group, a watchmaking giant, to refine the MEMS motor design for seamless integration into watches. The motors, now suitable for direct soldering onto a single surface-mount printed circuit board, offer advantages for hybrid smartwatches. These watches, combining smartwatch functions with physical hands, often face size constraints. SilMach's MEMS motors, being smaller, allow more space for additional electronics and sensors, facilitating the creation of more compact and technologically advanced hybrid smartwatches.
