This is more true in business than ever before. Unless you’re an FBI negotiator, gone are the days of tense, real-time negotiations and exchanging blows with a single stakeholder across a boardroom. When when many of us think of good negotiators, we think of personality traits: Affable, extrovert, authoritative. With the rise of digital communication and centralized, multi-stakeholder decision making, personality has taken a back seat to sound commercial strategy and iterative planning. By formalizing a strategy that begins with the end in mind, you can: 1. Systematically step through each gatekeeping event while deploying an expansive list of issues that collectively cater to each stakeholder involved in the buying decision 2. Establish an anchoring point that allows you to comfortably concede in the latter stages of the buying cycle - signaling flexibility while still securing a desirable margin 3. Use partnership options to gain information about relative priority of issues to each stakeholder, allowing you to modify certain terms to gain buy-in from reluctant parties

What's your mindset going into a negotiation? How do you view your counterpart? We believe that connection is central to achieving strong agreements. This doesn't mean you must build a deep relationship, nor does it mean you have to be fully transparent. What we do promote, is the idea that connection creates the dialogue which allows you to understand your counterpart's interest. When we have a better idea of what their needs, desires and offers are, we can then decide if entering into agreement is in our best interests moving forward, providing them the service or product they are looking for. Is connection a central theme in your negotiations? #Negotiation

You can’t ace negotiation if you can't listen! Listening to the other side at the beginning of a negotiation is of utmost importance for several reasons. A thoughtful and well-considered response after listening to the other side goes a long way. In order to demonstrate understanding, repeat back what you heard the other side saying. Once you do that, you also should read between the lines and present the emotional nature you heard. This can sound like, “I sense that you are dissatisfied with the way things are going” or “It seems like you are frustrated with how I handled the issue.” It shows that you understand the needs of the other side. Once you demonstrate understanding, you can all brainstorm together to come up with a mutually beneficial solution. Learn to problem-solve together
