Cummins’ Nebergall discusses the future of hydrogen IC engines In a July Engine Technology Forum (ETF) webinar about hydrogen internal combustion (IC) engines and decarbonization, Jim Nebergall of Cummins said decarbonization of vehicles and equipment is going to require a variety of approaches. The general manager of Cummins’ hydrogen engine business added that it will take “multiple power solutions, including advanced combustion engines, battery electric and fuel cells. We need diverse solutions.” Supporting that philosophy is Cummins’ HELM strategy. Standing for “higher efficiency, lower emissions, multiple fuels,” Jane Beaman, who leads Cummins’ on-highway business, said in a video on the company’s website that the approach gives “customers control of how they navigate their own journeys. They can choose the fuel type that works best for them, their businesses and their goals.” Engines developed as part of the HELM program are engineered so that selecting a fuel type, including hydrogen, requires a minimum number of components to be changed. “It’s ordered from the factory as a diesel engine or natural gas engine or hydrogen,” Nebergall said in an interview with Power Progress. “So, part of that that investment strategy is to enable us to be nimble and to have more options for the market because we do believe many options will be required to decarbonize.” However, according to Nebergall, two of the HELM program’s engines — a 6.7 L and a 15 L — are both on track to be ready for hydrogen fuel. “We are testing both of those engines in different places in the world actively today,” he said. “They’re in test cells, and we’re actually testing on four continents at the moment with those two engines.” Cummins Inc. FUEL CELL TESTING: CamMotive expands UK #hydrogen powertrain test capacity in UK #CamMotive, an e-powertrain development consultancy, has expanded its hydrogen fuel cell testing and development capabilities with the launch of a new facility in #Cambridge, UK. This dedicated test site aims to advance the viability of hydrogen #fuelcell technologies and accelerate innovation in clean energy markets. The development of this test facility is part of CamMotive’s role in a consortium led by Ford Motor Company to build a small fleet of prototype hydrogen fuel cell versions of its electric E-Transit commercial vehicle. The three-year FCVGen2.0 project, announced in May 2023, is partially funded by the UK government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK‘s Collaborative R&D program. “Our objective was to create a test environment to support and accelerate the development cycle for new hydrogen fuel cell technologies, including hardware and control system optimization,” said Bruce Campbell, director of CamMotive. Daimler Truck AG and Linde introduced a new liquid hydrogen refueling technology at a public station in Worth, Germany. Compared to conventional refuelling technology with liquid hydrogen (LH2), the new process uses a new sLH2 pump to increase the pressure of the liquid hydrogen slightly. The method turns hydrogen into subcooled liquid hydrogen (sLH2). According to Daimler Truck, it will be a “very robust fuelling process,” which results in lower energy losses during refuelling than conventional LH2 processes. In addition, no data transfer between the refuelling station and the vehicle is necessary, further reducing the complexity of the refuelling process. The advantages of LH2 and sLH2 over gaseous hydrogen are well known. The energy density is higher, allowing trucks to cover more distance between refuelling. As “only” a liquid is refuelled, the process is faster than with the gas. Daimler Truck AG and Linde Engineering introduce a subcooled liquid hydrogen (sLH2) refueling technology. Compared to gaseous hydrogen, sLH2 offers higher storage density, greater range, faster refueling (10-15 minutes for a 40-ton truck carrying 80 kg of liquid hydrogen), lower costs, and superior energy efficiency. This technology aims to provide a practical, CO2-neutral alternative to diesel for heavy-duty vehicles. Additionally, it reduces required hydrogen refueling station investments by two to three times and lowers operational costs by five to six times. Daimler Truck and Linde Engineering invite other OEMs and infrastructure companies to adopt this industry-standard hydrogen refueling technology.
