We can't believe it's already been a year since Russ and Tim hopped from train to train on an 18 hour trip down to Berlin, linking up with our client EnviroSustain GmbH. 😱 What would have been handy is having a few quicker and quieter trains on the journey, and Berlin's leading party just proposed to do just that by announcing plans to test driverless maglev trains in the city. Maglev is a technology that's been around for quite a while, and involves the use of electromagnets to propel trains forward without the need for moving parts. The world's fastest bullet train uses maglev technology and can reach speeds of over 600kph! It sounds simple enough, right? Have magnets on the bottom to push the train off the ground, have magnets near the front to pull the train forward, and magnets near the back to push the track behind and away. However, you also need to use a specific metal called neodymium for the magnets and keep them extremely cold to keep their magnetic fields strong enough to propel an entire train (that means proprietary cooling systems). Maglev technology isn't just confined to high speed bullet trains. Low speed maglev trains exist too, and these are best used in urban environments like Berlin for their low noise and smaller size compared to traditional transit systems. While the running costs for maglev can end up being the same, or even higher than traditional trains and tracks, overall construction costs tend to be a lot lower.
