Adolescent pregnancy and child early and forced marriage unions (CEFMU) are serious problems in the Philippines that can have devastating impacts on girls’ lives. It can prevent them from completing their education, limit their opportunities for employment, and increase their risk of domestic violence and abuse. In 2023, Save the Children’s Sponsorship Program shifted its design to highlight and address the issues of adolescent girls in informal settlement families and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Through our new design, we can facilitate access to sexual and reproductive health information and services for them. The Sponsorship Program introduces the Family Development Approach (FDA) to ensure that children have healthy relationships and are supported by their families, communities, and institutions. FDA equips parents with knowledge of gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), promotes open communication within families, and encourages parents to be proactive in protecting the rights of children, especially girls aged 10 to 17 years old. The Sponsorship Program is currently co-designing the FDA with girls and their families, which will be implemented in 2024, with its implementing partners, Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (FPOP), in Caloocan, Malabon, and Navotas, and Ha Uman Inc, Mahintana Foundation Inc, and Kasilak Development Foundation Inc, in South Central Mindanao. Breaking the cycle of gender inequality and encouraging girls to advocate for themselves opens up endless possibilities for them. Join Save the Children as we celebrate #DayOfTheGirl. Together, we can continue to create a long-lasting impact on the lives of Filipino children. #SaveTheChildrenSponsorship #IDG #IDG23 #ForAndWithChildren

👉 Launch of UNFPA’s 2024 State of World Population (SoWP) Report We were thrilled to attend the launch of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)'s 2024 State of World Population "Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope: Ending inequalities in sexual and reproductive health and rights" report at the UK Parliament today! Marking the 30th anniversary of the landmark ICPD conference, this year's State of World Population report highlights the strides made in securing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) globally. However, it also shines a light on those left behind in this progress. The report emphasizes the need for renewed focus on empowering marginalized groups for a truly equitable future. Alvaro Bermejo, IPPF Director General congratulated UNFPA on this timely report and highlighted the importance of global solidarity in narrowing inequalities and tackling the anti-rights movements. #SRHR #ICPD

🌍 World Population Day 2024 🌍 For humanity to progress, everyone must be counted. Accurate population data is crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of women worldwide. Here’s why it matters: Identify Gaps: Knowing how many women are affected by issues like reproductive health and violence helps us identify gaps in services and support. Tailor Solutions: Detailed data allows for the creation of targeted programs that address specific needs, ensuring no woman is left behind. Measure Impact: By counting everyone, we can track progress and measure the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving women's lives. Act: Invest in women’s health to ensure every woman can make informed decisions about her reproductive health. Promote reproductive rights to reduce violence and complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Support education for all to empower the two-thirds of women who cannot read. Together, we can transform futures by counting and empowering every woman. #GoodHealthForAll #WorldPopulationDay #EmpowerWomen #ReproductiveHealth #WomenRights #TakeAction #CORONARemedies

On #WorldPopulationDay sharing the dramatic growth over the last few decades. It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, it stands at almost 7.9 billion in 2021, and it's expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030. 😳😲 #didyouknow 1. More than 40 per cent of #women around the world cannot make decisions on sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. 😔 2. A woman dies every two minutes due to pregnancy or #childbirth (and in conflict settings, the number of deaths is twice as high). 😖 3. Just six countries have 50 per cent or more women in the #parliament. 4. More than two thirds of the 800 million people globally who cannot read are women. #worldpopulationtrends #factsandfigures #unitednation #internationalday #shockingfacts #womenintheworld

UN Report Points to Yawning Gap of Inequality in Sexual and Reproductive Health Worldwide A new study says an African woman is roughly 130 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth complications than a woman in Europe or North America, the U.N. population fund reported as it decried widening inequality in sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. UNFPA’s latest “ State of World Population ” report also estimates that nearly 500 maternal deaths per day occur in countries with humanitarian crises or conflicts, and shows that women of African descent in the Americas are more likely to die giving birth than white women.

Does investing in sexual and reproductive health and rights really make a difference? The answer is yes: "We’ve seen teenage pregnancy rates fall in places we work. In the Philippines, project areas saw a decrease of 30% in teenage pregnancy rates, compared to a 13% national decline over the same period. Partners have also helped prevent hundreds of early and child marriages through community engagements, including 59 cases in Ethiopia in the last 6 months alone." Five years ago, following years of advocacy by Oxfam Canada and our allies, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a major 10-year funding commitment to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in the Global South. There's still work to be done, but women’s rights activists and SRHR actors around the world have shown us what lasting change can be done with Canadian international assistance. Women and girls worldwide can’t access vital sexual and reproductive health services, leaving them exposed to unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Every year, approximately 303,000 women’s lives are taken due to complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, with 99% of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries. UNFPA Supplies is the world’s largest program for distributing essential contraceptives – but they need more support. That’s why we’re calling on Canada, as a global champion of women’s and girls’ rights, to step up and increase their pledge to UNFPA.
