The world's largest hydrogen-fuelled ship is set to be constructed in Norway. "Operating at an average speed of 17 knots in often challenging conditions, the vessels will navigate the 278km-long Vestfjordstrekninga ferry route connecting Bodø, the islands of Røst and Værøy, and Moskenes. A hydrogen storage unit onboard the vessel will feed gas to the fuel cells, creating electricity to propel the vessels and power their auxiliary systems, reducing CO2-emissions on the route by around 26,500 tons each year. The alternative fuel newbuilds with biodiesel backup, bring together LR as the class society, owner Torghatten Nord, The Norwegian Ship Design Company, Myklebust Verft shipyard, systems integrator SEAM, and hydrogen supplier GreenH." For short-sea, small and medium sized vessels, hydrogen fuel cell propulsions seem to be a good fit. Some challenges to look out for: 1. Purity of Hydrogen fuel bunkered. 2. Durability of the fuel cells. 3. Guidelines to safely handle and store hydrogen fuel, best practices could be learnt from LNG/bio/e-methane. Additional potential benefit of hydrogen as a fuel, as with bio/e-methane: 1. Possible provisions to recover waste cold from cryogenic systems, which could be used in the Air-conditioning/refrigeration systems. What are your thoughts on this? 🚢 On February 27th, we celebrated the naming ceremony for the impressive 14,100TEU "COSCO SHIPPING URUGUAY" container vessel which surveyed by CCS at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co., Ltd. https://rb.gy/j268wl 📈 This vessel, measuring 335.9m long, 51m wide, 29.9m deep, boasts a design draft of 14.5m, a design speed of 22 knots, and a design container capacity of 14,100TEU. It features a cutting-edge combined #desulfurization system, meeting the stringent 0.1% Sulfur #emission requirements of #IMO. 🌍 Noteworthy features include an intelligent ship system, meeting CCS standards for smart navigation, engine room management, and #energy efficiency. Its capabilities extend to suggesting optimal routes, monitoring equipment, and reducing operational costs. 🌿 "COSCO SHIPPING URUGUAY" is the third vessel in a series of six 14,100TEU container vessels which completing its maiden #voyage with zero defects in port state #PSC inspection. OSV markets started 2024 in a very strong position and further OSV demand gains are expected for the course of the year. For our company, 2024 began with two of our large AHTS units ‘Theseus Z’ and ‘Apollo Z’ starting their long term contracts with Petrobras, while our third AHTS ‘Capt.Nicholas Z’ will be next to follow. It has been a year and a half since we purchased three beautiful Havila units (Mars, Mercury, Neptune) and reactivated them in Damen shipyard in Amsterdam, while at the same time, we started the reactivation of ‘Capt.Nicholas Z’ in Rio. Four large AHTS reactivations simultaneously – an epic achievement by any standards – (not certain it has been done previously) that has led to three long term contracts in Brazil.
