For 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, here are two mythical CMMC claims that I have heard, along with the reality of the situation: 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: "I'm not going to do (NIST SP 800-171 compliance) until someone contractually forces me to do it." 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: If you have a DoD contract, you already have to do it by law. If you're waiting until it's time for the 3PAO to come in and audit you, it's too late. You will need to have shown you had the controls in place and were compliant over time. That effort must start now (if not yesterday). 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: "We are going to take care of it in-house." 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: You don't have the personnel (or funding) to do it internally. You need Cyber GRC, Operations, Assessment, and Architectural expertise. Small/mid-sized companies typically don't have that and can't find/hire/retain it. There will be starts/stops and discontinuity resulting in failure.
