Dawn Aerospace has unveiled its innovative Docking and Fluid Transfer (DFT) port for SatDrive propulsion systems, enabling in-space refueling. This technology replaces manual fill/drain valves with a passive interface, adding only 0.6 kg. Starting in 2025, all SatDrive systems above 10 kNs will include this port. Speaking on the technology, CEO, Stefan Powell said, “Dawn is currently producing about one satellite propulsion system per week. Not all will use the DFT, but if a significant fraction does, we foresee potentially hundreds of refuelable satellites on-orbit by the 2030s. Dr. Pat Anderson, VerdeGo Aero’s CTO, presented the results of a study comparing VTOL powertrain architectures at the IEEE Aerospace Conference. Hybrid powertrains were found to be lighter and more capable than either battery-electric or mechanical powertrain options for VTOL aircraft using distributed propulsion. One of the last tests we had in the visualization lab was related to taking pictures at 1000 fp.s of water spraying from an injector. One of the most important challenges of liquid spraying visualization is sufficient resolution to check the diameter of the sprayed droplets. To get the best clarity of the image and to detect the diameter of the drops, it is necessary to use a lens with the right depth of field and lighting at the right angle. #highspeed #experimental #combustion #aerospace #aerodynamics #fluidmechanics #spray
