Science has shown microbes remain on surfaces for days, weeks, months and years despite best efforts to clean and disinfect them. Why do materials matter? Examples: green board specified in the elevator shaft that was value engineered out to another product to save money. Moisture in this area and the wrong material specification caused mold to grow in the elevator shaft. The aspergillosis outbreak in the transplant unit was traced back to the elevator shaft. A laminate counter was specified in a decontamination area of sterile processing. Moisture caused delamination, and tapping of instruments on the edge of the counter caused serious damage. This surface couldn't be cleaned and disinfected. Laminate is porous and can't be cleaned and disinfected without damage. #Surfacesmatter #patientsafety #infectionprevention #Healthcaresurfacesinstitute

“…the belief that better cleaning and disinfection practices alone will reduce the spread of HAIs must be reexamined. The challenges begin long before cleaning and disinfection take place—with surface selection and design. A collaborative effort that brings together a diverse group of thought leaders, health care professionals, manufacturers, scientists and others is critical to explore root caues and develop sustainable solutions that will mitigate the spread of HAIs.” A very thorough and interesting article for how to strategically minimize microbes and healthcare associated infections in healthcare facilities!

Enhanced disinfection can play a bigger role in decreasing HAIs than you think! 🌐 A series of studies have shown that improved disinfection cleaning can enhance cleanliness by an average of 82%. This improvement has been linked to an average 68% decrease in environmental contamination of high-risk objects. Furthermore, enhanced standard disinfection cleaning is associated with a 40% decrease in the transmission of VRE, MRSA, and A. baumannii.
