Grimalkin Records is looking for a QTBIPOC sound engineer to run sound for our 3rd annual festival in Richmond, VA. It's on October 12-13 at Basic City Beer Co. The equipment there isn't great so we were hoping to hire someone who also has equipment to ensure good sound. Last year, Musiq Cultura RVA ran sound for us. Rei was great, but this year they aren't available for both days and we're trying to keep the sound consistent. Rei is going to play the day they're available instead. Ideally, we would like to record it from the soundboard as well. Oct 12 is 4pm-midnight and Oct 13 is 4pm-10pm. I know the manager Alex there and he said we can leave everything securely overnight from the 12th to the 13th. We can guarantee a minimum of $400 per day. We're fundraising and so it depends on if we reach our goal if we can pay more. Last year we guaranteed Rei the same rate, but we were able to pay them $500 a day after we saw what we raised in total after the festival. This may not be great pay. We're a nonprofit and so anything additional could be an in-kind donation. I know that doesn't pay the bills though. If you are interested or know someone who is, please email [email protected]. Grimalkin Fest is a manifestation of our mission and a celebration of Queer Joy and Resilience through a sharing of music, skills, resources and connections. It also supports, uplifts, and cultivates relationships with musicians, other creatives, community partners, and our communities. Last year, our festival’s budget was $12,600. Over $10,000 went directly to the performers and folks working at and planning the event. That's 86% of our budget going directly to artists and folks working the fest, which is unheard of as far as I know for festivals. Our goal is to raise $26,000 to expand this year’s festival budget. Achieving this goal will allow us to: *Compensate folks for travel *Provide food and snacks *Rent a house for out-of-town performers *Purchase decorations, supplies, posters, and locally silk-screened shirts *Hire a video editor for the virtual live-streamed day *Compensate event planners *Hire a consultant to assist the volunteer coordinator *Rent Starlink equipment to live-stream events happening during the two in-person days *Increase compensation for performers and folks working at the fest Last year, our budget didn’t allow us to compensate travel costs, provide full meals for performers, workers and volunteers, fairly compensate event planners, hire a consultant to assist volunteers, nor rent a Starlink to live stream the in-person days. A budget increase will. https://lnkd.in/emDMDwyJ

I would really like to know more about what’s going on in this particular situation. Many nonprofits have a volunteer guild that supports them. I was a member of as well as the recipient of the benefits of guilds both when I was at Weathervane Playhouse in Akron as well as at the Akron Civic Theater. I believe the Civic theater guild still exists, It provides financial and volunteer support on behalf of the Civic, which is essentially a presenting organization. Weathervane”s guild, which started as a women’s guild, and then eventually added men has been all but eliminated because certain members of the board did not fully appreciate the work of the volunteers. I think this was mainly because they did not appreciate the opinions that came along with that volunteer support. When you have a volunteer program, which is essential for most nonprofits with which I have worked, it needs to be managed smartly either from a dedicated staff member or by people who really want to take the leadership on as a volunteer and are willing to do this under the direction of the nonprofit it serves. Of course the Metropolitan Guild looks like it was quite an operation; more like it’s own organization that was built up to serve the needs of the Met. But even in a not-for-profit, having too many opinions about how things should be managed can be detrimental. That may well be why this is happening—I don’t know for sure, of course. But I also worry that, for many nonprofits across the United States, losing those passionate volunteers that are willing to come and support the needs of a local nonprofit is what part of what is bringing the not-for-profit arts organizations to their knees in recent times. I was listening to a story on NPR this morning about an Animal Hospital sanctuary in Sausalito which utilizes 150,000 volunteer hours to keep itself in operation. The volunteers ranging from age 11 to 90. There’s some real merit in this type of service and if it can keep an organization going I think that’s a good thing. But to do this takes really smart management, realized gratitude, and appreciation for the people who are helping you do the work you’re doing. And eliminating in the organizational culture a caste system between those who are being paid and do this for a living and those who are volunteering and doing it as an avocation. It takes a special kind of leader to manage this balance and it’s harder than you think. And in my opinion, ordinarily, you can’t do this for too long…because ultimately opinions get in the way. But I think this support is essential, unless we completely upend the nonprofit system in this country as it stands. If only for survival purposes, smart organizations, should be looking for leaders that know how to do this. Off the box now.—

The sensitive but important issue of the future of successful arts and culture nonprofits is addressed in this piece. Is it time to change the model all together? Is what is happening in Los Angeles relevant to arts organizations in other cities? What about rural areas? The author asks, “Might the replacing of old models in the performing arts be a good thing that allows new, forward-thinking, flexibly adaptive organizations rooted in innovative performance models a chance to emerge?” #arts #artsorganizations #nonprofits

I know I'm really early in my career, but I've learned early on from my peers and mentors that relationships and community are everything. It's also equally important to understand why communities need to be built and read the stories of the people who paved the way. One of the communities that's helped me is the Asian American Collective which is a community dedicated to helping Asian American creatives and dreamers like myself build relationships and find opportunities. Below is an insightful interview with one of the founders and why she created the community. I highly recommend reading it! #community #representation #representationmatters #losangeles #nonprofit #asianamericans
Brand Entertainment Marketing Leader. Co-founder Asian American Collective, Variety Top AAPI's Making Impact. Vice President, Marketing @ Universal Music Enterprises.
Community is everything. You 100% get out, what you give in. As I approach my 40th year on Earth next week and reflect on some of the most impactful work I've done throughout my 30's, building Asian American Collective with my partners and dedicating time to community, civic and political work -- have been my greatest achievements. I'm proud to enjoy building, nurturing and unapologetically caring for others. Because it's not about the words you say, but showing up to be a good person who empowers others as much as you can, consistently and selflessly. Thanks to Voyage LA for this interview about my work in the community and how it's shaped me: https://lnkd.in/d8Q6_s3v To building more in 2024! #LosAngeles #Nonprofit #community

TODAY ONLY USE THE CODE FYG2W-GP66M to double your donation! I need $37 dollars to complete this project!!! "My students are very interested in music. We learn all about the beat, rhythm, musical instruments, composers, performance, careers in music and much, much more! I am requesting sand blocks for my youngest students to make percussion scratching sounds, some pool noodles to cut to add to the scratching sounds, copy paper for my lessons, and musical stickers for rewards for a great class period. Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. The art of practice and perfection from music class allows students to develop skills in other classes, such as math, science, English and more. Many of my students receive special education services and they mean the world to me. I am blessed to teach them hands-on music skills and these tools will help them connect to music in a very special way." Support this classroom here: https://lnkd.in/e-buZ2J5
