“The National Deaf Children’s Society gave us reassurance that deaf children can do anything. That’s why this survey is so close to my heart.” 💜 We’re on a mission to find out the most important questions that need to be answered about childhood deafness, and we need your help! We’re asking deaf young people aged 16 to 25, parents and professionals to share their insights in a short, five-minute survey. And for deaf children under 16, they can join in too with the help of a parent or carer. Juliet, who is a parent of a deaf child and part of the project team’s steering group, shares why taking part in this survey is so vital. Ready to make a difference? Tell us what you want future research on deafness to focus on here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e3NqZ6dE

Pretend play unlocks unlimited fun and potential for working on speech and language goals! Follow your child's lead and interests - children are motivated to interact and learn when they are doing things they like. SLEA Therapies' SLP Crystal shows us how it's done in her session with two sisters dressed up as firefighters! Both sisters are working on increasing length of utterances as well as bilabial and alveolar articulation sounds. They took turns putting out fires and calling out "I/you do it!"; "Open it [door]" and "Hit it/Hit it more" with the axe. More ideas for pretend play include: toy animals, dolls or stuffed animals, pretend food and kitchen, puppets, toy vehicles, and dress up clothes or hats. #sleatherapies #speechandlanguage #pretendplay #articulationtherapy #speechtherapy #esop #employeeowned #occupationaltherapy #educationaltherapy #childhooddevelopment #behaviorintervention

Leveraging Tech-Enabled Music Education and Music Based Employment to Empower Youth & Adults on the Autism Spectrum
10 years ago, I came across a YouTube video where an individual, who was non-speaking and diagnosed with autism, was able to sing beautifully because he had perfect pitch. After watching that video, I asked why. WHY IS THIS THE CASE? WHY IS HE ABLE TO SING EVEN THOUGH HE HAS CHALLENGES WITH SPEAKING? COULD MUSIC BE AN UNTAPPED TOOL FOR CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS, LIKE HIM, WHO ARE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM? IF SO, WHY HAS NO ONE STUDIED THIS? Well, today, I have successfully defended my dissertation titled "You Can't Have Inclusion Without Music: Utilizing Music Performance to Inform Caregiver-Selected Service Outcomes for Youth and Adults on the Autism Spectrum From Communities of Color”. My dissertation is a body of work that answers the questions I asked above, and even answers A FEW MORE! Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing some interesting discoveries I made as I collected an analyzed data. In the meantime, come celebrate my dissertation and the musicians that inspire me at the Jazz Hands For Autism concert THIS SATURDAY! GET YOUR TICKETS TO THE EVENT HERE: https://lnkd.in/gwZPUuyt
