Food gardens help fight inflation Growing your own vegetables and berries means you rely less on store-bought produce, which are highly subject to price increases during inflationary periods, thus effectively countering the impact of inflation. This benefit of food gardens was already studied by researchers in 1978: "The question of economic value of a home vegetable garden is relevant in a period of dramatic inflation. Literature indicates that interest in home vegetable gardening is at its highest level since the Victory Garden effort during World War II; 49% of U.S. households grew vegetable gardens in 1975. Produce buyers have noticed an impact on vegetable sales as urban families grow more backyard vegetables." Source: American Society for Horticultural Science / Artist: Akhilesh Sharma

After 60 years trading in beautiful West Devon, Endsleigh Nursery has shut its gates for the last time. This is another grower-retailer nursery that has closed. The end of Endsleigh means the loss of a nursery growing and championing old Westcountry apple and cherry cultivars, not to mention a range of often scarce ornamental trees and shrubs. Gardeners say they value traditional nurseries and that they value the often rarer and more unusual plants they grow, but the truth is that garden centres and online retailers continue to outpace traditional nurseries. The loss of each small independent nursery represents a shift towards a more homogenised range of plants available to gardeners, and a scarcity of nurseries brave enough to try a more diverse range of plants. Small nurseries, especially grower-retailers, are an important part of our horticultural heritage; they're not easy to run and even harder to start from scratch, and as we lose them we risk losing the diversity of plants they produce and sell. A sad loss for Westcountry horticulture. #gardening #plants

Did you hear? The USDA has updated its Plant Hardiness Zone Map for the first time since 2012. And its new map could change which flowers, fruits, and vegetables you grow. The 2023 map shows that half of the country has shifted to warmer zones over the last decade, which means many gardeners may be able to grow plants that would not previously survive in their part of the country. Read more about the new map (and how to download a copy for yourself!) at https://lnkd.in/gn9XDRyg #SeedSaversExchange #USDA #Agriculture #Horticulture #Gardening #Climate

Tree peony large fixed planting seedlings, formed plants, and shaped tree peonies are all different growth stages or cultivation forms of peonies, and they have obvious differences in multiple aspects: 1. Large scale fixed planting seedlings: This is usually the final stage of tree peony seedlings. After years of growth and cultivation, a certain growth foundation has been established, but a complete tree shape has not yet been formed. They are usually used in nurseries or parks for large-scale landscaping. 2. Tree peony forming plant: This refers to peonies that have already passed the seedling stage and are relatively mature. Their tree shape has basically formed and has certain ornamental value. These peonies have usually undergone years of growth and pruning, with stable morphology. Each plant has certain ornamental value and is suitable for planting as an ornamental plant in courtyards or parks. 3. Shaped Tree Peony: This is the advanced form of tree peony, which not only grows and matures, but also has been designed and trimmed by professional horticulturists to form a unique shape and style. These peonies have extremely high ornamental value. Price and Value: Due to differences in growth stage and cultivation difficulty, the prices of these peonies in the market also vary. Generally speaking, the price of large-scale fixed planting seedlings is relatively low because they are in the early stages of growth and have not yet formed a complete ornamental value. The prices of formed and shaped tree peonies are higher, especially shaped tree peonies, which are often more expensive due to their unique shape and horticultural value. Cultivation difficulty and maintenance requirements: As the growth stage improves, the cultivation difficulty and maintenance requirements of these peonies also gradually increase. Large scale fixed planting seedlings are relatively easy to cultivate, as only appropriate growth environments and maintenance measures need to be provided. The formed and shaped tree peonies require more meticulous maintenance and management, including regular pruning, fertilization, and pest control. #peony #tree peony #peony seedling

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) updated the Plant Hardiness Zone Map late last year - for the first time in a decade. The findings indicate that about half of the country moved to a warmer half-zone, and though the USDA credits the warmer map to more precise and extensive data collection, others are calling it #climatechange. Read more about what the new map means for growers (and check to see if your hardiness zone shifted) in this article I wrote for Eden Brothers. 🌱 https://lnkd.in/e-UH3dhU #agriculture #agnews #gardening

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking GARDENING Gardening is the practice of growing and cultivating plants as part of horticulture. In gardens, ornamental plants are often grown for their flowers, foliage, or overall appearance; useful plants, such as root vegetables, leaf vegetables, fruits, and herbs, are grown for consumption, for use as dyes, or for medicinal or cosmetic use. Gardening ranges in scale from fruit orchards to long boulevard plantings with one or more different types of shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants, to residential back gardens including lawns and foundation plantings, all the way to container gardens grown inside or outside. Gardening may be very specialized, with only one type of plant grown, or involve a variety of plants in mixed plantings. It involves active participation in the growing of plants and tends to be labor-intensive, which differentiates it from farming or forestry.

A new study in the journal Hort Technology finds that 60% of US homeowners bought a native plant in 2022 and spend 80% more on plants than do their conventional counterparts. "This is the era of native plant gardening and ecological horticulture!" says Native Plant Trust CEO Tim Johnson. "Demand for native plants grown without harmful chemicals is on the rise. For those marketing native plants, add to their known value to pollinators and regional fauna the perception that native plants are better adapted to difficult sites." He adds, "The challenge for us is to make sure there is a sustainable and ethical supply of seed to meet the demand."
