As governments worldwide get serious about #decarbonizing their economies, demand for cheap, safe, high-performance, long-lasting, and low-carbon-footprint #batteries will soar, most notably from the #automotive industry. There will likely be a severe but temporary global #battery shortage by 2025 due to a sharp increase in demand for electric vehicles (#EVs) and a shortage of mined and refined battery metals. However, the industry is investing heavily to prevent this from becoming a sustained threat by reducing its use of scarce materials, developing new materials and #battery #technologies, and, most importantly, creating a global #battery #recycling industry. #EnergyTransition #Innovation #urbanmobility #futuremobility #electricvehicles #automotive https://lnkd.in/gPixJGxp

Solid state batteries were not supposed to happen until the end of the decade, but it sure looks like they are happening now. The new technology is billed as a next-generation improvement on the familiar lithium-ion EV batteries. A solid state battery offers more range, faster charging, longer lifecycle, improved safety, less supply chain risk, and enhanced recycling opportunities. So, what’s not to like? “The 2022 estimate is $153/kWh on a usable-energy basis for production at scale of at least 100,000 units per year. That compares to $1,355/kWh in 2008. The decline in cost is due to improvements in battery technologies and chemistries, and an increase in manufacturing volume,” they explained. #batteries #battery #batteryenergystorage #solidstatebatteries https://flip.it/Qjb8Qi

We are so excited to see the recognition that lithium-sulfur is gaining as the future of batteries, and Zeta Energy's lithium-sulfur batteries in particular! Thanks to Electrek.co for the shout out! "...battery tech startups Lyten and Zeta Energy, as well as manufacturing company Coherent, stand out – because they’re working on lithium-sulfur batteries. Each of the three companies received more than $3 million specifically to develop lithium-sulfur battery tech, which researchers at Argonne National Lab say could be more affordable to produce than ion-based batteries while also offering superior energy density to “conventional” li-ion batteries." https://lnkd.in/ghBJm_6m #EVs #batteries #lithiumsulfur #cleantech

EV Battery Demand Could Skyrocket, Tripling Resource Needs by 2050 A new study from Japan’s Ritsumeikan University reveals a potentially massive increase in raw material demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, challenging current estimates and raising questions about the sustainability of the EV revolution, reports The Register. Battery Resource Needs Set to Explode Researchers project that demand for EV battery materials could triple by 2050, with lithium-ion batteries potentially accounting for over half of all automotive industry resources by that time. This surge is driven by the global push towards electrification, with countries like the UK, Japan, and the US setting ambitious EV adoption targets. “In the automotive sector, electrification […] by Haye Kesteloo #ev #Nevada #Oregon #SEC #Tesla

The article discusses the automotive industry's interest in sodium-ion batteries as a more abundant alternative to lithium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion technology, particularly embraced by companies like BYD and CATL, is seen as a solution to supply chain issues due to sodium's abundant availability. Despite lower energy density and life cycle compared to lithium-ion, sodium-ion batteries are highlighted for their cost-effectiveness, safety, and environmental benefits. The forecast suggests a modest adoption in light vehicles by 2030, with potential growth if they match lithium iron phosphate batteries in energy density. #SustainableEnergy #BatteryTechnology #FutureOfMobility
