Are you missing out?
I love watching the Olympics on TV:
✅ You can see everything in close up as the cameras home in on competitors and specific events, though they do have big screens at all the venues
✅ Fantastic commentary from the many wonderful commentators we have. And I do mean commentators – experts in their sport – not post-event interviewers (https://lnkd.in/e4iwsCzQ). Very happy to miss hearing those painful post-event interviews
✅ Focused – one event at a time as it goes live. And very exciting to back your team… Come on!
✅ Slow-mo and replays so you can see anything you might have missed
But what do you miss by watching remotely, through one device or another?
✅ The extraordinary energy of being in a live environment, being part of an enormous crowd
✅ The action of multiple disciplines present at the same time. For instance, in the athletics, as the hurdlers finish their race, the hammer throwing resumes, between throws, the long jumpers perform…
✅ The noise of supporters backing their team – no TV or device can go that loud
✅ All the participation you don’t see on TV. Between events, broadcasts give you analysis and replays, but in the venues you’ve got Mexican waves, inter-venue decibel-level contests, karaoke and all sorts of activities that keep the spectators engaged and having fun while they excitedly anticipate the next event
✅ The sound of nations getting on with each other, even when they’re backing their own representatives – Allez les bleus! come on! Los! And all the languages I don’t speak uniting us all in the fabulousness that is the Olympic Games
I loved watching on TV and I loved being there, live. But they are different and each brings different benefits and pleasures.
So, too, at work. Sometimes, the effort of showing up, in-person delivers benefits you can’t access through a device.
Imho it’s about balance. Sometimes digital platforms are ideal. Other times, you’ll get more from being together, in person. Mix it up. There are benefits to both options and just sticking to one means you can easily miss out on the full picture.
