Whether it’s creating an outfit on a mannequin, or an incredible experience with our guest - I make sure my team gets positive and constructive feedback to ensure they know that they are valued and that if anything does need some work, we will work through that together to be THAT much stronger in their role and duty on the sales floor. When a 16-year-old employee has you saved as "Allison best boss ever," it's a testament to the culture we've built. Succession is no longer a concept; it's a shared goal. The supportive environment breeds empowerment—I regularly express pride, a sentiment some haven't heard from past leaders. This isn't about boasting; it's a reminder that team retention lies in creating a space where they want to stay. While we may not offer the highest pay or the most hours compared to every business they could seek, we have heart, passion, and a genuine love for what we do. How do you innovate and affect the lives of millions of people? Great question. #Listen. #Borrow. #Experiment. Such was the approach of Herbert Strauss in 1924. Strauss was the President of Macy's and it was the roaring 20’s. Times were good. They had just expanded their anchor store to an entire city block, over one million square feet. Such growth meant a lot of hiring and the majority of these hires were immigrants from Europe. Loving the sentiment of the #Thanksgiving holiday, these newcomers had embraced their new home and wanted to show pride in their new heritage. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲. Mr. Strauss was all ears. It turns out that Gimbels, a rival of sorts, was already hosting a parade in Philadelphia. Could Macy’s borrow that idea? Could Macy’s best that idea? Why not? How about allowing the employees to march in the parade? Perhaps borrow some animals from the Central Park Zoo? In fact, what about welcoming #SantaClaus at the end of the parade in Herald Square? That first parade was attended by over 250,000 people that saw floats of Mother Goose and Little Red Riding Hood. Those employees? They dressed as clowns, cowboys and knights while bears, elephants and monkeys joined in the procession that included four marching bands. Listen. Borrow. Great advice for leaders

There aren’t many leaders that I respect more than Best Buy’s Senior Executive Vice President, Kamy Scarlett. She’s brilliant, fun, warm, supportive, and has a way to cut through BS without having to wear a rebellious Sons of Anarchy leather vest to do it. She leads with her authentic personality and embraces and celebrates the individual personalities of her team. Kamy knows that being a front-line associate in a retail environment is a tough gig with long hours, disrespectful customers, and tons of direction from head office. Beyond product knowledge, they have to know specials, offers, and have a photographic memory of the binder that outlines the 5000 guidelines that dictate everything from how to bag a box to 60-day return policies. Kamy’s plan was simple. She simply went to her frontline staff and told them to forget all of that. There was only one direction they needed to understand and to put into practice: “Be Amazing”. That’s it. Be amazing. Kamy hired her people based on beliefs and values and expected them to be amazing at their jobs but she tossed away the script and let them deliver “AMAZING” in their own authentic way. It’s simpler, it’s easier to commit to memory, and it’s way more fulfilling which creates a much better experience for the customers AND the staff. When you inspire your people to be amazing, they will be.
