Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC) is a cross-disability, intergenerational, multicultural disability justice organization that creates fully inclusive communities that value the dignity, equality, freedom, and worth of every human being. SVILC offers housing services, and their specialists obtain and present updated information on the available wait lists and open housing opportunities to their members at their weekly workshops and during 1-on-1 appointments. SVILC works with other housing organizations to better understand and address the concerns of each member seeking housing. Each member is receives coaching and resource information to best equip them for their housing search journey. Cross-party political support on #Neurodiversity has been a core part of our mission, so I was thrilled to talk to the Labour Peer, Baroness Anderson of Stoke-on-Trent about #AutismAcceptance.   Her strong message included that “Autistic people are a valued, incredibly important part of our community. The more we can talk about it, the more conversations we can have, the more that everyone feels part of an inclusive society and build for the community that we need to have now.”    There have been some truly negative developments recently – disabled children removed from school photos, disabled women referred to as ‘mangled’ and ‘grim’. These things are truly not acceptable and show that, while progress has been made, we do not yet have an accepting, inclusive society.     But every one of you can help – share my post and those from Neurodiversity in Business (NiB) - the Neurodiversity Charity as well as other Autistic advocates. Uncorrected refractive errors are a global disability, hindering productivity, education, and quality of life. The problem persists most prevalently in low-income settings, even though prescription eyeglasses serve as a simple and effective solution. However, affordability, accessibility, and awareness serve as major barriers to solving this problem. Through our Community Outreach Program, we can effectively extend our reach to diverse global populations and communities. This initiative also serves as a valuable asset to our nonprofit collaborators who aim to integrate vision programs into their endeavors. Most importantly, it allows us to provide life-changing vision services and glasses to people in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach places who would otherwise lack access. If I handed you $700 Million dollars, would you think that was "a lot" of money? Would you retire early, travel, buy a house (or four), maybe a few cars? Would you send your kids to the "best" schools, source the "best" doctors and specialists to care for your family? .... now, what if I handed you $1.4 Billion dollars? Would you do even more with it, or would you invest for future generations? When we talk about money, a number of 700 million or 1.4 billion is more than we can even wrap our brains around. It seems like a TON of money, more than we have ever imagined! Now, let's frame those numbers in the context of disabled people. In our world, there are roughly 700 million (at the least) to 1.4 billion people living with a disability. Does that still feel "a lot" to you? It IS a lot of people, yet we are continuously minimized, marginalized, ignored, and erased. Imagine what it would be like for your organization to acquire millions or billions of clients. You'd be successful beyond your wildest dreams. Disability is knowing that if you could just do that "one thing" that things could get better then finding out that "one thing" is actually a long set of steps that are poorly defined and have multiple gates you have to navigate through in order to access that vital thing that could make life better. It's realizing that access to this resource is just within reach but also out of reach because the constant need to self-advocate and compensate is draining. My point is this. You cannot just say that targeting self advocacy in goals is enough. We need people to advocate for us too. We need a culture where we support and advocate for each other rather than leaving people to dangle over the figurative & literal edge. The perspective above is from my immediate and ongoing experiences. I am exhausted and I have privilege and power that is atypical of a multiply disabled person (only 15% of autistic adults are able to hold and maintain jobs). I am exhausted but I keep going because if I don't I will probably lose momentum. There are days that I wish I could afford a executive assistant (although I prefer executive function assistant). This isn't a complaint so much as an attempt to help you all understand how vital your advocacy is to those you support and work along side. Do not expect self advocacy for everything. Be willing to step forward and help without having to explicity be asked. It eases burdens and creates community that ends up helping everyone.

Our Network members are pleased to provide a white paper which outlines our views regarding the design of the new foundational support and disability ecosystem for children and families. As experienced community-based not-for-profit child and family organisations, we believe that we have much to contribute to the upcoming discussions on co-designing this system for children and families. Our intention with the white paper it to present ideas to support design-thinking and co-design collaboration. Our paper summarises: - The principles fundamental to a new supports ecosystem including examples of past and present practices that exemplify these principles. - The potential to integrate foundational supports into the existing service ecosystem. - The role of Navigators and Lead Practitioners (Key Workers). - How community-based not-for-profit child and family organisations play a crucial role in the broader child and family sector as accessible, localised points of support bridging universal and targeted services. We also address the ways in which conflicts of interest can be managed within these frameworks. We look forward to engaging with government, our sector colleagues and other key stakeholders in the co-design process around foundational supports.
