In celebration of Black History Month, I feel it’s important to recognize the Black innovators in data science and AI. There are so many Black icons to applaud in these fields. Like Dr. Gladys West, whose mathematical calculations laid the foundation for today’s GPS. Or Lisa Gelobter, a computer scientist credited with developing the digital animation technology used to create GIFs. And Joy Boulamwini, who conducts research on AI's social implications and founded the Algorithmic Justice League to work toward a world with more ethical and inclusive tech. These trailblazers are true pioneers in their fields, and they inspire me daily. Between 2014 and 2021, the number of Black professionals working at large tech companies increased just 1%, according to a report by Kapor Center and the NAACP. There is more to be done to ensure Black students are exposed to STEM careers and have resources available to succeed. Addressing systemic inequalities and understanding the social and cultural contexts of black girls' lives is crucial for creating equitable STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning environments. By centering their voices and experiences, educators can develop strategies that resonate with these students, leading to more meaningful and empowering educational experiences. This approach can significantly support black girls' academic achievement in STEM and help bridge the educational disparities often present in urban contexts

Happy Monday New Rainbow fam! “It is important to support the development, growth, and sustainability of Black educator pipelines across the country during this critical inflection point in our history, given the anti-CRT backlash, book banning, and other features of the culture wars that serve to perpetuate white supremacy. Educating Black children well is the highest form of activism and we need committed, well-trained Black teachers to accomplish that.” -Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development. According to the research, by having just one Black teacher in elementary school, Black students were more likely to graduate high school and significantly more likely to enroll in college. As we proceed through this month, we wanted to highlight impactful African Americans in STEM. Kimberly Bryant is the first creator we would love to highlight. Bryant's experience prompted her to create Black Girls CODE, "an organization that provides computer science workshops, after-school programs, and classes to girls in underprivileged communities around the world."
