You may checkout the presentation I gave recently on behalf of the FLEX-SCALE consortium at the Hexa-X-II flagship project workshop on the future of #6G, joining other Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) SNS Phase 1 project consortia, about the research we perform on #6Gnetwork #xhaul, with the goal to exchange ideas and strengthen the 6G research #ecosystem. 👉 FLEX-SCALE advances disruptive research on x-haul network technologies associated with #OpticalSwitching nodes and their #Transceivers Interfaces. Our goal is to enabling flexible capacity scaling of 10 Tb/s rate per interface (based on #oDAC transmitters), 1 Pb/s capacity per link (based on #UWB and #SDM), and 10 Pb/s throughput per optical node (based on a Multi-Granular architecture incorporating novel PIC WaveBand Selective Switches; #WBSS). 👉 The developed x-haul 6G optical network #innovations will achieve record energy efficiency and low cost per bit, enabled by photonic integration and optical transparency, replacing/bypassing power-hungry and costly electronic processing systems. #odacistheway

The #PROTEUS6G project strives to deliver multiple technological building blocks to realize a fully flexible and reconfigurable functional split within a 6G fronthaul architecture. This initiative aims to establish all-to-all connectivity between multiple customer premises units (CUs), distributed units (DUs), and remote units (RUs) while minimizing optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions. This will improve energy efficiency and reduce latency. The project will achieve these goals by developing innovative devices, systems, and subsystems that embody the concept of spatially parallel input for multi-point communications. This includes: 👉 Optical point-to-multipoint nodes equipped with fast, reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers. 👉 Simple yet ultrafast, plasmonic-based Lite-Coherent optical transceivers. 👉 Orchestration and control systems for adaptive management, enabling dynamic functional splits. #OpticalCommunications #DynamicFunctionalSplit #Telecommunications #TechnologyInnovation #EnergyEfficiency #LatencyReduction

A milestone for our paper "Terahertz Technologies to Deliver Optical Network Quality of Experience in Wireless Systems Beyond 5G". It reached 250 citations! The paper was authored by Alexandros-Apostolos A. Boulogeorgos, Angeliki ALEXIOU, Thomas Merkle, Colja Schubert, Robert Elschner, Alexandros Katsiotis, Panagiotis Stavrianos, Dimitrios Kritharidis, Panteleimon-Konstantinos Chartsias, Joonas Kokkoniemi, Markku Juntti, Janne Lehtomaki, Antonio Teixeira, and Francisco Rodrigues. Abstract: This article discusses the basic system architecture for THz wireless links with bandwidths of more than 50 GHz into optical networks. New design principles and breakthrough technologies are required in order to demonstrate terabit- per-second data rates at near zero latency using the proposed system concept. Specifically, we present the concept of designing the baseband signal processing for both the optical and wireless links and using an E2E error correction approach for the combined link. We provide two possible electro-optical baseband interface architectures, namely transparent optical-link and digital- link architectures, which are currently under investigation. THz wireless link requirements are given as well as the main principles and research directions for the development of a new generation of transceiver front-ends that will be capable of operating at ultra-high spectral efficiency by employing higher-order modulation schemes. Moreover, we discuss the need for developing a novel THz network information theory framework, which will take into account the channel characteristics and the nature of interference in the THz band. Finally, we highlight the role of PBF, which is required in order to overcome the propagation losses, as well as the physical layer and medium access control challenges.
