Why Creativity Flourishes at The Intersection of Cultures #Creativity is a beautiful result of diverse perspectives coming together. Marcus Samuelsson, the renowned chef behind Aquavit in New York, exemplifies this truth. His fusion #cuisine, blending #Swedish ingredients with global flavors, not only elevated his restaurant but also ignited our taste buds. Frans Johansson, author of "The Medici Effect," points out that Marcus's ability to draw associations across cultures is what drives his creativity. It's the same phenomenon that sparked the Renaissance when the Medici family brought together minds from various #disciplines. Harvard University's approach to building a #neuroscience department is another testament to the power of diversity. Instead of recruiting solely from within the field, they assembled a team of diverse talents, leading to groundbreaking #research. The Medici Effect teaches us that innovative ideas are born when existing ideas from different realms collide. More ideas naturally lead to better ones, often in the most unexpected ways. Companies like Hewlett Packard understand this, fostering diversity to drive innovation. Global companies are adapting products to local markets with astonishing results. L’Oreal's curved mascara brush, inspired by Japanese preferences, is a prime example. And let's not forget the versatility of small sachets, originally designed for affordability but now embraced worldwide for their convenience. In the culinary world, Indian chefs are creating magic by blending traditional recipes with Western techniques. It's a fusion of cultures on your plate. Remember, innovation comes with risk, and not all ideas will succeed. However, the most innovative companies understand that inaction is the true enemy of progress. So, let's celebrate diversity, encourage creativity, and embrace the Medici Effect. #Innovation #Creativity #Diversity #TheMediciEffect Read by Dibeyendu Ganguly : https://lnkd.in/dt6VWDSf

"Conflicts are inevitable" Last week, I visited Copenhagen and had the opportunity to explore the Carlsberg home. In addition to learning about their famous beer 😃 , I discovered an intriguing chapter in its history. The founder of Carlsberg, J.C. Jacobsen, and his son, Carl Jacobsen, experienced a significant conflict that led to the creation of two separate breweries in 1882, turning them into competitors. Carl’s decision to start producing a beer with a shorter storage time was the reason for a conflict between the two men. I was thinking while coming back, when father and his single child can have the conflicts over business strategy then imagine boardroom. "Conflicts are inevitable" for professionals/thinkers. Its very much ok to have conflicts. However, the same is crucial for the evolution of any idea and ultimate value creation. The key isn't to dodge it, but to face it head-on and work towards resolution. What are your thoughts on conflict? #ConflictResolution #Carlsberg #ProfessionalGrowth #Fridaypost

Hello again LinkedIn! After a significant pause from posting, I’m excited to be back, sharing insights and stories from my journey. Today, I want to highlight a recent transformational experience we had at Giuliana Wine Company and Giuliana Imports. Personally inspired by Simon Sinek’s ‘Infinite Game’ and our company’s deep-rooted ‘why’, we recently reimagined our review meeting. Our ‘why’ at Giuliana Wine Company is all about “celebrating people, their unique stories, and the rich, global heritage of wine and spirits. We think beyond the bottle, embracing shared passions and enduring family legacies, making every sip an experience of shared humanity.” With this ethos in mind, we transformed a routine annual review meeting into an inclusive dialogue, engaging every team member, from management to sales to warehouse team members, in a conversation that transcended roles and departments. The impact? A renewed sense of purpose and connection, with several team members expressing how this approach resonated deeply with them. This reaffirms two crucial beliefs: 1. Inclusivity Drives Innovation: Inviting diverse perspectives fosters creativity and unity and a clear sense of direction. 2. Purpose is Powerful: Aligning with our ‘why’ motivates and inspires at every level of the organization. As I re-engage with this wonderful online community, I’m curious to hear from you: How do you incorporate your company’s ‘why’ in your daily operations and team interactions? #teamengagement #Leadership #WineIndustry #SharedHumanity #wine #sales #team #startwithwhy #infinitegame #mindsetgoals #atomichabits

✨ The Tale of the Global Potluck: A Cultural Intelligence Odyssey ✨🌍 Ever been to a global potluck where the dishes were as diverse as the attendees? Picture this: An Italian pasta next to a spicy Thai curry, a hearty Nigerian Jollof rice, and an American pumpkin pie. That's exactly where our story unfolds, at a multinational company's annual potluck, starring Alex, a manager with a secret ingredient up their sleeve – Cultural Intelligence (CQ)! 🍲 The Challenge: Alex, known for their culinary mishaps (last year's lasagna is still a funny yet slightly painful memory), decided this year to bring something unique – a dish that blended ingredients from the various cultures present at the potluck. The mission? Not just to win the "Dish of the Day" but to showcase the power of understanding and integrating diverse cultural perspectives. 🌟 The Journey: Alex embarked on a quest, diving into the world of Cultural Intelligence. Through this journey, Alex discovered the four types of CQ: 1- CQ Drive: The motivation to learn and adapt to different cultures. Alex's drive was fueled by the desire to connect deeply with teammates from around the globe. 2- CQ Knowledge: Understanding cultural similarities and differences. Alex hit the books (and the internet) to research food preferences, dietary restrictions, and cooking methods across cultures. 3- CQ Strategy: Planning in culturally diverse situations. Alex plotted a course to create a dish that wasn't just a mix but a true fusion, respecting and highlighting each culture's unique taste. 4- CQ Action: Adapting behavior to different cultures. Through trial, error, and a lot of taste testing by friends from various backgrounds, Alex refined the recipe to ensure it resonated well with everyone. 🎉 The Outcome: The day of the potluck arrived, and Alex's dish was a hit! It wasn't just about the flavors but the story behind each ingredient, bringing people together, sparking conversations about traditions, and opening minds to the beauty of diversity. 🔑 The Lesson: Cultural Intelligence isn't just a professional skill; it's a bridge to deeper connections, innovative solutions, and mutual respect in a diverse world. It's about more than just surviving in a multicultural environment; it's about thriving, leading with empathy, and embracing diversity in all its forms. 🤝 Let's Connect & Share: What's your experience with Cultural Intelligence in your workplace? How do you blend different cultural perspectives to create something unique? Share your stories and insights below! Let's inspire each other to elevate our Cultural Intelligence for a more inclusive and innovative world. 🌐🍴 #CulturalIntelligence #DiversityAndInclusion #GlobalTeamwork #Leadership #ProfessionalGrowth

Professor at University of Oregon; Speaker; Author; Chair at Brand New View LLC; opinions are my own; overly fond of coffee
Only a couple more Italy posts before the next adventure… As our time in Siena draws to a close I remain utterly transfixed by the history, the people, the architecture, the culture, the food, the wineries, the business practices and, well, the list truly goes on. There is no singular takeaway as the enormity of this experience is still something I am processing. At the end of the day, what we experienced is the by-product of centuries of people working together, tirelessly, imaginatively, devotedly through perilous times (the Black Death in the mid-1300s was unimaginably horrifying…) and good times (the Renaissance was a remarkably fruitful, creative, exploratory period with perhaps the greatest concentration of cultural and artistic creativity ever…), with a collective impact that has touched societies far beyond Italy’s modern borders. Teaching, but mostly learning, the sustainability practices of the region’s wine industry was a key reason I came and, as I have learned and believe, Italian wineries are businesses with invaluable lessons for people everywhere. It has also been a blast spending time with students as they immerse themselves in the local region, as well as across Europe. May their curiosity never tire as society evolves. Yet what really stands out to me are not any singular sector, or group of people, or regional environmental conditions, or cultural traditions, but the interdependency amongst a vast array of ingredients, born from more than two millennia of human history and countless interactions, conflicts, and inspired feats, the culminating recipe of which we were fortunate enough to experience this summer, and future generations will hopefully get to enjoy as well. Don’t sit back, do take action, and embrace traveler’s eyes in everything you do. You will reap rewards that will positively influence your life, including how you work with others and lead businesses to a better and more sustainable future.#business #businessasaforceforgood #doingwellbydoinggood #leadbyexample #leadership #leaders #sustainability #italy
