✈️ Reflecting on Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2024 🌍 How can artificial intelligence make aircraft design and production leaner? What role could innovative, eco-friendly materials play in our industry’s drive for sustainability? How may we redefine the concept of air travel to add new value to the passenger experience? These were some of the challenges that Adrián, Carmelo and I engaged with as part of the 2024 Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition, renewed this year for the first time since the pandemic. Out of 213 teams from 60 universities in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, and the Netherlands, we were honoured to represent ISAE-SUPAERO as one of the six teams selected for the semi-finals. During this journey, we had the opportunity to present our proposed solution to a distinguished panel, including a senior engineering leader at Airbus. The feedback and discussions were incredibly enriching, providing us with new perspectives and insights. Although we didn't make it to the final round, this experience has been immensely rewarding. Tackling complex, interdisciplinary challenges pushed us to think both creatively and holistically. As graduate students in engineering, the state of the art is our bread and butter, but it is always a special treat to be able to integrate the big picture with the ways and means. We decided to step out of our comfort zone by taking on the Business Model challenge, developing a comprehensive solution at the intersection of emerging technologies and market realities, with sustainability and social impact always on our minds. This competition has reinvigorated my conviction that with thoughtful innovation, we can transform our industry into a lean, green engine for positive social change. ATI’s Head of Technology – Sustainability and Strategy Adam Morton joined the University of Air Transport (UTA) in Hamburg to support the delivery of their latest executive training on the theme of "Disruptive Technologies and Operations for Decarbonization". UTA offers a high-level training course for C-suite executives in aeronautics and air transport. The aim of training is to encourage a common, systemic and cross-disciplinary vision of the challenges the sector faces and to grow links between stakeholders. Adam’s panel explored a wide range of key aerospace and aviation technology topics including: ✈️ Potential role of aircraft electrification in addressing carbon emissions 📅 Timelines for penetration of hydrogen With the backing of the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) and the French School of Civil Aviation (ENAC - Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile), together with leading industry players such as Airbus, Dassault Aviation and Thales, the course is growing in both impact and ambition. Held at the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research, the programme includes modules in Spain, France, Germany, Poland and Belgium. Adam’s session saw 35 attendees from across Europe grappling with questions on social issues, talent acquisition, financing innovation, plus local and global environmental challenges. Centred around highly interactive workshops, the discussions were intense and challenging for course attendees and visiting contributors alike. Adam commented: "It was fantastic to share so many of ATI’s sustainability insights from our pioneering Destination Zero, FlyZero, Hydrogen Capability Network and Non-CO2 Emissions Technology Roadmap initiatives. Paving the way for sustainable aviation globally 🌍 Last week, we accompanied a Dutch delegation led by the King's Commissioner Arthur Van Dijk in the US. Our discussions with American counterparts were focused on the rollout scenarios of electric flight in California. On behalf of VÆRIDION,  Nando van Arnhem and Evan O'Connor participated. Nando completed his PhD in Aerodynamics at Delft University of Technology in 2022 and remains a visiting researcher there alongside his role as Aerodynamics Lead Engineer at VÆRIDION. Evan previously worked in California on R&D regarding lightweight and high temperature resistant materials before joining VÆRIDION as the Lead Mechanical and Materials Engineer. ✈ From conversation to action Arthur Van Dijk signed the Letter of Intent underlining the commitment of the State of California and The Netherlands to further work together towards sustainable aviation. It's now more than ever we have to join forces to achieve our ambitious sustainability goals. 🏢 New spaces, new opportunities We are honoured to be a part of Dutch aerospace ecosystem, with our new office location at the Aerospace Innovation Hub @TU Delft. ✈ [SUSTAINABLE AVIATION] The AeroMAPS tool, developed by two ISAE-SUPAERO researchers, Scott Delbecq and Thomas Planès, can be used to assess the environmental impact of air transport and the effectiveness or limitations of levers for decarbonizing the sector. Initially designed for research and training purposes, it now serves as a multidisciplinary platform for experts and decision-makers from institutions, industry, and associations. Its development has been integrated into the work of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA), a collaborative research institute initiated by Laurent Joly, head of research for sustainable aviation, which aims to address the transition to #lowcarbon #aviation in all its complexity. By playing on the sector’s transition levers, AeroMAPS users can define the scenarios whose impacts they wish to analyze. For example, the introduction of new aircraft types, the use of new fuels or the rate of growth in air traffic. AeroMAPS is the first air transport scenario simulation platform built on an open-source scientific methodology. It was initially designed and developed to enable researchers to explore air transport transition scenarios in detail. It was soon integrated into training programs: first as part of the ISAE-SUPAERO engineering curriculum, then as part of continuing education programs. To see the bigger picture, the two researchers added a socio-economic dimension to their tool (via a thesis conducted by Antoine Salgas, a doctoral student on the project, in partnership with TBS Education), and subsequently, a traffic and emissions inventory, enabling the analyses made with AeroMAPS to be partitioned and regionalized: the AeroSCOPE tool, created as part of a collaboration with the Dutch university Delft University of Technology. Today, AeroMAPS' comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is a decision-making aid for the entire aeronautics ecosystem, as well as for institutional, industrial and association decision-makers. 📣 Exciting News from the #MEA2024 Conference! 🌐🛩 This February, our esteemed CONCERTO Project partners from ISAE-SUPAERO and Airbus took the stage at the More Electric Aircraft 2024 conference in Toulouse, France, to present their outstanding work, entitled "Hydrogen Aircraft Certification: Determination of Regulatory Gaps". ✳ This groundbreaking study sets out to identify and bridge the regulatory #gaps that currently hinder the certification of hydrogen-powered aircraft. By scrutinizing existing #regulations, the research delves into the adequacy of current #standards for accommodating the novel architecture and safety requirements of hydrogen-fueled aircraft.
