Field Operations Engineer 🖤💀⚙️ 🔥 Subsea and surface trees have a wide variety of manual and/or hydraulically or pneumatically actuated valve configurations. Examples are identified in API Specifications 6A and 17D. A basic surface shaft consists of two or three manual valves (usually gate valves due to their flow characteristics, i.e. low restriction to fluid flow when fully open). A typical sophisticated surface tree will have at least four or five valves, usually arranged in a crucifix-type pattern (hence the strength of the term "Christmas tree"). The two lower valves are called master valves (upper and lower respectively). The master valves are normally in the fully open position and are never open or closed when the well is flowing (except in an emergency) to prevent erosion of the valve sealing surfaces. Underwater trees contain many additional valves and fittings compared to surface trees. Typically, a subsea tree will have a choke (allows flow control), flowline connection interface (hub, flange, or other connection), subsea control interface (direct hydraulic, electrohydraulic, or electric), and sensors to collect data. Windsor Engineers provided engineering analysis for hydraulic structures on fish-bearing China Camp Creek in Coos Bay, Oregon.   The Windsor mission: Troubleshoot a tide gate system and propose solutions to upgrade the system to meet performance and reliability requirements. The system includes eight automated tide gates used to control flows during high and low tides, to allow water to be placed in appropriate channels for fish spawning grounds.   Windsor scope included mechanical, electrical, controls, and permitting review and assessment tasks. The project includes structural improvements to gates, gate installation, new gate actuators, new electrical and controls system, and temporary construction shoring. Field Operations Engineer 🖤💀⚙️ Greetings colleagues, What happened here? .. ☕ Who do we call? ☎️ Problems and failures in the use of flexible tubing: ⚠️🔥 - Ovality: defined as 100% x [Dmax Dmin] / Dnominal above a fixed amount. - Ballooning: which is caused by high pressure in overworked tubing. - Necking: caused by excessive tensile force during use; this is often made worse by any prior lowering of the tensile strength. - Corrosion: on either surface, which is caused by acid, sea-water. - Erosion: on either surface, which can be caused by fluid flow, including acid. - Splits: which result from high pressure, corrosion and pounding, in various combinations. - Injection damage: in which transverse marks, or longitudinal gouges are placed in the OD of the tube. - Wear: against the well or casing, which includes wear caused from buckling. - Strain softening problems: which manifest themselves through loss of yield strength, and which are currently impossible to measure without cutting the tube. This affects collapse resistance. The most serious problems induced in UCT are however, created by relatively sharp bottomed transversely oriented imperfections from which fatigue cracks may initiate during tensile or bend cycling.
