I'd appreciate your thoughts on this - #carbon #offsets: a load of BS, or an effective tool to tackle #climate #change? Here are 2 conflicting perspectives (I'm sure amongst many others). “Study after study has indicated that most offsets available on the market don’t reliably reduce #emissions, and yet offsets are now the backbone of the #environmental policies of many of the biggest #polluters on the planet.” “But exactly how offsets are bullshit is really interesting... “because it’s easy to say that you are reducing carbon emissions but it is much harder to prove it. And the truth is, there aren’t many checks and balances in place to prevent abuse.” These are comments from John Oliver piece in the Guardian from Last Week Tonight in 2022. https://lnkd.in/gbty6c6U And then the #SBTi (a highly recognised body for supporting meaningful #science-based carbon reductions) recently decided that it will consider recognizing environmental attribute certificates, including carbon #credits, for #abatement purposes in tackling value chain emissions, which this article notes as "a significant milestone in the global battle against climate change" - primarily because it will enable more #finance to tackle climate change. So who's right, and why? Please share your thoughts as a comment below.

Love this piece for highlighting the complexity around #Climate_action. What can #Corporate_Boards learn from this? - Setting the net zero (doesn’t equal emissions reduction) targets - Boards need to ensure the business models can be effectively adapted to greener ways. - Factoring in the externalities - an example given in the article about grid delays impacting the transition plans. - What is the source of the underlying data - are we using estimates over estimates to calculate the emission reductions? - Is my company’s net zero strategy prone to climate litigation? Feel free to share your views and add your concerns.

Carbon credits have hit the mainstream, but scrutiny has highlighted the need for high-quality offsets and fraud elimination. Despite valid concerns, it's crucial not to lose sight of the bigger picture. The voluntary carbon market, when upheld with integrity, will be a powerful tool to mobilize the necessary funding for systemic change and meet global climate goals. #ClimateAction #CarbonCredits #ForestConservation #SustainableFuture

Carbon offsetting has received a bad rap due to the prevalence of low-integrity offset projects that fail to remove emissions from the atmosphere. The market for carbon offsets is largely unregulated, leading to the sale of dubious credits that do not benefit the climate. However, offsetting may still be necessary to combat climate change. To ensure that it is done in a more transparent and effective manner, three key principles must be prioritized: direct emissions cuts, high-integrity carbon removal projects, and long-lasting solutions. Buyers and investors must take responsibility for reforming the carbon offsetting market until governments intervene with regulations. #CarbonOffsetting #ClimateChange #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact To Read more-🔗 Below.
