The treatment and care of preterm babies are critical to ensure their healthy development. Upon birth, these fragile infants often require specialized neonatal care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This includes monitoring vital signs, temperature regulation, and nutrition through intravenous or tube feedings. Preterm babies may need assistance with breathing, such as ventilators or CPAP machines, to support their underdeveloped lungs. Kangaroo care, where the baby is held skin-to-skin by the parent, helps with bonding and temperature regulation. Care extends beyond the NICU, involving early intervention programs, developmental assessments,follow-up care to address potential long-term health and developmental issues. The meticulous care and medical attention given to preterm infants offer them the best chance at a healthy, fulfilling life. What are the lived experiences of infants in the NICU? Dr. Natalie Duffy, a neonatologist from Australia is investigating just that! In her article, The lived experiences of critically ill infants hospitalised in neonatal intensive care: A scoping review, you can read more about her detailed analysis. Here is a summary of the recommendations made: (1) Noise reduction (2) Use of infant directed language (3) Early recognition of stress and individualized care (4) Noxious light protection (5) Use of single-family rooms with attention to sensory experiences (6) Pain monitoring and intervention (7) Early parental engagement (8) Protection of sleep (9) Use of evidence-based trauma-informed practices Reference: Duffy, N., Hickey, L., Treyvaud, K., & Delany, C. 🏥 A NICU stay is incredibly stressful for the newborn and their parents. Hospitals and staff can help families manage this challenge. Our latest #ResearchNews reveals the benefits of family-centred care (FCC) for infants and their families at the Children’s Hospital Passau. Among other measures, the hospital assigns each family showing risk factors for preterm birth a nurse who guides the parents through caring for their newborn in the NICU. In addition, both parents have permanent access to the unit and are involved in treatment decisions. These FCC interventions bridge the emotional and physical gap between parents and their infant and thus improve the parents’ psychological well-being in the hospital setting and the baby’s physical health. Family involvement even appears to provide protective factors, preventing, for example, neonatal sepsis. 👉 Find out more at: https://lnkd.in/dwtm7t3y #FamilyCentredCare #NICU © Pixabay
