🚨 New Report on Shein's Working Conditions 🚨 Despite pledging to improve working conditions, a recent investigation by Swiss advocacy group Public Eye reveals that some suppliers for Chinese fast fashion giant Shein are still subjecting workers to grueling 75-hour work weeks. This follows up on a 2021 report that exposed excessive overtime among staff at six sites in Guangzhou. Key Findings: 13 employees from six factories reported working 12-hour days, six to seven days a week. Wages remain low, fluctuating between 6,000 to 10,000 yuan per month, with basic wages as low as 2,400 yuan after overtime deductions. Workers face penalties for mistakes, unpaid overtime to rectify errors, and increased surveillance. Reports of toddlers in factories, teenagers packaging items, and unenforced smoking bans. Shein's Response: Shein claims significant progress in enhancing conditions and asserts that long working hours are a common industry challenge. The company is investing millions in governance and compliance, aiming to ensure fair compensation and voluntary work hours. Shein denies having access to surveillance footage and emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy for child labor, supporting childcare centers to help workers balance responsibilities. Industry Impact: Shein’s rapid growth, especially during the Covid pandemic, is driven by its ability to turn around new items quickly through thousands of third-party suppliers. The company acknowledges ongoing challenges and stresses the need for industry-wide collaboration to improve working conditions. We need to recognize both the human rights abuses and climate damage that fast fashion is perpetuating. But there is also a cycle at play - people can't afford to buy quality items as inflation continues, wages don't keep pace with cost of living, and desperation sets in. The question is how do we break these cycles of companies capitalizing on desperation?

If you haven't been aware of the larger impact of fast fashion, especially with brands like Shein, you haven't been paying attention. It's not good for the environment or people to have clothes made this cheaply. I've been trying to be more intentional about the shopping I do, going for secondhand/vintage sellers, having found that the brands I would normally gravitate towards (J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade, etc) can be found in great condition - sometimes even better than modern clothes from the same brands! - and for a fraction of the cost. Win win win. #sustainability #intentionalconsumerism

I choose not to support Shein due to concerns about their labor practices. The reports of long working hours, low wages, and poor working conditions within their supply chain are deeply troubling. As someone who values fair treatment and rights for workers, it's important for me to align my support with companies that prioritize the well-being of their employees and adhere to ethical labor standards. By choosing not to support Shein, I hope to send a message that unethical labor practices are unacceptable. I believe that companies have a responsibility to ensure that their workers are treated fairly and provided with safe and dignified working conditions. Supporting companies that uphold these principles is not only a matter of personal ethics but also a way to advocate for positive change within the fashion industry and beyond.

But they no longer do! "Being able to work while still being who I am raises my motivation," A relaxed employee dress code "definitely makes it easier to hire workers," Akindo Sushiro, the operator of conveyor-belt sushi chain Sushiro, last November allowed its Muslim female employees to wear hijabs. In addition, male employees are allowed to grow beards for religious reasons on the condition that they wear face masks while working I wish I could dye my hair brown too haha, but I look too japanese so I usually keep it black for professionalism.
