Software Engineering Mistakes [5/5] Hire Python/Javascript/Scala Engineers It drives me crazy when someone says, “I’m a Python engineer” or “I’m a Rails engineer.” ‼️ Don’t hire folks who define themselves only by the specific technique they know. While it’s great to be specialized and proficient in a given language, it is more important to be a good → engineer ←. This involves: 👉 Being curious and having a growth mindset. 👉 Being willing and able to learn new technologies, languages, frameworks, techniques, etc. 👉 Reading books, blogs, articles, specifications, etc., and putting them into practice. 👉 Trying new things and evangelizing them within their team or company. If someone is unwilling to do this and defines themselves by what they already know, these are huge 🚩 red 🚩 flags 🚩 that they are not a good engineer. While you desperately may want a specialized person to help you with your very narrow problem, try to resist the temptation. You are hiring someone with a hammer, and they will find only nails. A person with breadth is much more likely to find good solutions to your problems than bill you for doing the only thing they know how to do best. Good interview questions: ❓ How do you grow as an engineer? (Start broad and see how they approach the question). ❓ How do you stay up-to-date with the latest developments in your field? (Note how broadly they define it). ❓ What resources do you utilize to learn about new areas? (Are those specific, or did they make up something general on the fly?)

It’s designed based on an actual problem that we’ve had to solve in the product and our goal is to see how you think through engineering problems. This will involve working with Python and data frames in pandas, but it’s ok if you are not a pandas expert - any library-specific functions you need will be provided. Final onsite interview: 30 min. We will walk through an engineering design problem together to see how you think about systems at a higher level. This is collaborative and we’ll talk through solutions and tradeoffs together.. This is a continuation of the take home coding challenge that will build on your previous solution and touch some different technical areas.
