QANTAS ADDING 250,000 INTERNATIONAL SEATS The Group's international operations will go from 80% of pre-COVID capacity to beyond 100% in Jul 2024. Qantas Group is adding more than a quarter million international seats on flights to New York City, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, and Bali, as additional aircraft return to its fleet. The additional flights, aboard three long-awaited Boeing 787s, are expected to take Qantas beyond 100% of its pre-COVID international capacity. New flights published through to the end of Aug 2024 include Sydney to Bali, Johannesburg, and Los Angeles, Melbourne to LA, and Sydney to New York via Auckland. Europe to Latin America, the third most important long haul region for European airlines, is back to 98% of 2019 capacity. This places it below the North Atlantic, but ahead of Europe-Asia Pacific. Within the Europe to Latin America market, Upper South America is the biggest sub-region, while Central America is the only one above its 2019 capacity levels. European airlines dominate Europe-Latin America, with 78% of seats scheduled for the first week of the winter 2023/2024 season, but Latin American airlines have modestly gained seat share since pre-pandemic. Air France and Iberia are the top two airlines by seats, with Air France-KLM and IAG the leading groups. Europe's other major group, Lufthansa Group, is only seventh. However, all three have shown interest in the forthcoming privatisation of TAP Air Portugal, which could significantly change the rankings. This just in from Air New Zealand (More details in TRAVELinc Memo next week): The airline will return to Hobart and Seoul in October 2024 after both were paused over the New Zealand winter period. Both the Auckland to Hobart and Auckland to Seoul routes will be seasonal services, three direct flights a week to each destination over the summer months from October – March. The airline will also be expanding its capacity on key Asian routes, with Singapore, Tokyo, and Taipei all seeing increases in seat numbers on offer between November 2024 and March 2025 as a result of the introduction of Air New Zealand’s larger 777-300 aircraft on these routes. While Air New Zealand is returning to routes and increasing some capacity, aircraft availability limitations due to ongoing engine challenges mean it has had to extend the pause to its Chicago service which was due to resume from October 2024.

BER - Berlin Brandenburg Airport seat capacity is set to be down 27% this summer (S24) versus S19 according to our analysis of Cirium data. Flights are down 31% but ASKs down a more modest 16%. Compared with S19 easyJet capacity is down 64%, Lufthansa down 33%, Eurowings down 21% and even Ryanair - Europe's Favourite Airline down 11%. As a result, Ryanair becomes the third airline in the last decade to be #1 in Berlin after airberlin and easyJet. However, if you combine Lufthansa and Eurowings then Lufthansa Group becomes #1 and is even more dominant if you include Austrian Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines. Worth noting how "Other" airlines' market share has been growing in recent years. North America saw turbulence as the number of flights canceled increased by 33%, while the majority of airlines showed decreases in On-Time Performance at the end of Q1. While North America navigates challenges, other regions showed remarkable improvements. With the leading airlines gaining a 5%-13% increase in On-Time Performance, the Asia-Pacific & Middle East and Africa regions displayed a positive trend in March. This resulted in the emergence of a new global leader from the Middle East and brought an end to Aeromexico's quick reign. Regardless of the marginal surge in flight cancellations (12%-18%), airlines still exhibited a substantial increase in On-Time Performance.
