Champion of UK Entrepreneurship and NED, No 1 bestselling Author of ‘The Secret Sauce - how to SuperScale your business and empower your talent with empathetic leadership’. Founder and former CEO of finnCap Group Plc
The Governments Women Led High Growth Taskforce reports next Thursday on our findings as to how we make a difference and increase the number of female led businesses scaling up and growing. As a man you are 5x more likely to scale yoir business past £1m turnover than a woman. We want to change that. Zandra Moore has been doing the most amazing work on the taskforce on regions and has just launched Lifted Ventures, to do just that. If you want to get involved in championing female high growth companies across regions do get in touch! #growth #founders #entrepreneurship #femalefounders #femaleentrepreneurs #femalefoundersrise
Yesterday we bought together a Leeds female founder ecosystem event on behalf of Zandra Moore as part of the government Women Led High Growth Taskforce conversation. Thanks to Anna Sutton for kicking the session off, and look at the wealth of talent in the room! Just what was required to consider how best to take action in addressing the statistics below: *5% of funding rounds in Leeds go to female led businesses and start ups * 1% of investment £'s goes to female founders. The conversation was uplifting and REAL in equal measure. Positive in that community and collective action is already taking shape, sitting alongside the pragmatism that structural barriers are not easy to shift. Here are some of the takeaways: 1. Male advocates are critical - we were very fortunate to have William Schaffer from Mercia Asset Management PLC and Dirk Mischendahl from NORTHERN BLOC ICE CREAM LIMITED join us, thanks guys 2. Focussing on GROWTH is more, or just as important as sector when it comes to areas of focus. 3. Inclusivity needs to underpin everything - thanks Sharon Kaur Jandu OBE for your insights and challenge on this important topic. 4. How to give everyone in the ecosystem the confidence and encouragement to challenge non inclusive behaviours. 5. Creating a REAL legacy - in terms of high profile success stories and a significant volume of success stories. And lots lots more good stuff....... more, much more to follow! Thanks to Eleanor Baker and Natalie Boswell from Lloyds Banking Group for funding the work behind the conversation and Chelsea Boothroyd from Nexus Leeds for the room and food. A few days ago I spoke at the FSDH Merchant Bank event. The theme was "Enabling the female economy". One of the topics that the Keynote speaker Adebola Williams spoke about is the need for more funding for female owned businesses, especially in Africa where women are more likely to start businesses than men. These are some of the numbers: Female GPs/fund managers received only 3.3% of all capital invested by LPs in 2020. That means 96.7% of all funding went to male fund managers. Here's where it gets interesting. Venture capital firms with at least one female investing partner are TWICE as likely to fund female founders and THREE times more likely to fund companies with female CEOs than VC firms with all-male partners. *Sources for my stats are in the comments.

Back with another inspirational ad... 💥👊🏻 When I asked my friends to share their favourite inspirational ads, Alice sent me the NatWest Back Her Business initiative. Alice’s career interests are within the finance sector, which traditionally has been an environment where women aren’t always given the same financial opportunities as men. Sadly, for female entrepreneurs, that is even more prevalent. 1 in 3 female entrepreneurs experience sexism, are less likely to be taken seriously and are often perceived as less competent than their male counterparts. And it’s no surprise that men are disproportionately represented in finance-related ads, in comparison to females. NatWest’s ‘Back her Business’ which showcases female-led businesses is a fantastic example of inspiring and encouraging greater - and more diverse - female representation in finance industries and in financial advertising. Alice’s thoughts: 👏🏻 "The bank has found a lack of financial structures that support women and is committed to research the psychological limitations female entrepreneurs face - mainly Imposter Syndrome. This initiative supports female entrepreneurs by offering bespoke training and coaching opportunities, reducing the gender pay gap by providing donation and reward-based crowdfunding opportunities. This is aimed to inspire the next generation on their journey to becoming a business owner by increasing the greater representation of female role model entrepreneurs, particularly in these typically male dominated spheres of work." #InternationalDayofTheGirl #RepresentationMatters NatWest - Back Her Business ad: https://lnkd.in/eQiBePAy

The initiative, which is being driven by BRAC Microfinance Program, aims to encourage female entrepreneurship by giving an unique platform for direct product demonstrations and sales. We emphasize women's entrepreneurial spirit and encourage them to sell directly to consumers. Additionally, they learn priceless information about the needs of the market for their goods. The growth of small enterprises is anticipated to be significantly aided by this initiative, ultimately boosting the economic empowerment of these small business owners. Women are gaining independence in both their financial and personal lives because of this effort. https://lnkd.in/er8rn434
