If I were interviewing someone for a PR job right now, here are a few things I’d ask: -What media outlets do you read every day? -What influencers and media would you target if you got the job? -Which companies are doing PR right what recent work has caught your eye? -What opportunities are we missing? You need to hire strong writer, no compromising there. But you should be able to glean their skill from their emails and their speaking manner. I’d only require a writing exercise if I were hiring for a junior role

I think some founders need to know the requirements for each role they are hiring for You don’t hire a person for a mod position and expect them to do the job of someone else as well. - You need a moderator, hire one. - You need a social media manager, hire one. - You need a writer, hire one - You need an influencer, hire one Don’t force it all on a person. You need a build a Team and not to give one person multiple tasks. So everyone can be 100% productive at their job.

PSA I came across a job listing and felt compelled to comment. It was advertised as a "Communications Coordinator" and the list of duties and areas requiring specialized skills was STAGGERING. They included; Copywriting for web, writing press releases, preparation of internal communications, speech writing, script writing, media coordination, photography, videography, video editing, social media content development, social media management, communications strategy, public relations, and on site support for events. This type of position has unfortunately been normalized in many businesses but let's be clear; the above is describing a minimum of three positions and it's likely closer to four. In our industry it has always been a challenge to explain the amount of training, expertise, and experience required to execute even one of these tasks at a high level. There are of course the realities of available budgets and team sizes to consider, but there are always solutions that go beyond stuffing unrelated jobs into one team member who's likely to be overworked, undervalued, and not performing well in any one area.
