Founder and Managing Director, The Fitting Room | Creating Hype, Demand and Legacy | Ad Age Leading Women in Marketing, Advertising and Media
It's been a busy few weeks here at The Fitting Room HQ. 😅 There's this incredible chapter in Steven Bartlett's book where he talks about when his agency started to change. And we hit that spot about 12 months ago. The balance of chaos and high energy vs process and ops. Over the last 3 weeks we've welcomed: 👉🏾 PR manager to team Hype. 👉🏾 Senior Marketing Executive to our business team. 👉🏾 Digital and Social Lead to our Demand team. 👉🏾 And in 2 weeks we have a Content Manager joining our Demand Team. I spend 90% of the day so excited, and then the other 10% thinking, 'f*cking hell' we're doing the damn thing. 😅 There's a fine line when it comes to not losing the spirit of why people want to work with you. And I've had some real lessons in this over the last year. I only want A-players at my table. People that do the right thing, not the easy thing. The people that get sh*t done. The people that run into the fires. And our recent hires are much closer to this - and therefore the OG team that put us on the map in the 1st place. Hiring is no joke. What a rollercoaster. 🙏🏾

Some COS thoughts How to hire & more importantly who to hire for the position. Navigating internal & external growth ✅↗️
When hiring a chief of staff, everyone wants someone “strategic.” It’s a great buzzword; I hear it all the time. And of course, we want employees to have a strategic mind and be able to think big in terms of company vision. The reality, however, is this: the majority of work a CoS will face is operational. A CoS needs to be able to roll up their sleeves and understand a company on a deep, detailed level. They can’t solely be in the crow’s nest looking to the future. That’s the CEO's job. The CoS is on the ground, listening to team members, identifying obstacles, and driving the company engine daily. Strategic expertise doesn’t hurt. But it’s not the be-all-end-all for the role. Hiring a CoS who can quickly and confidently operationalize your team is the most important thing.

I wholeheartedly agree with Tobey's comments below on this topic. No, a CoS that sits and 'thinks' all day would have little value, and the 'to do' list of a CoS is long, vast, and varied. However, being strategic also applies to how a CoS interacts and communicates across the enterprise with EQ, how a CoS becomes the glue within the organization to facilitate continual forward progress, and how a CoS strategically unites Leadership and the organization in a multitude of ways. Of course, this is only as feasible as the leadership supports it!

Head of Business Development - Yandex Advertising Network | Distribution of Search, Games, and Appmetrica
When I hire, I look for people who WANT to do bigger, better things. I don’t want to micro-manage or push. Instead, my job as a manager is to inspire my team by: 👉 Highlighting opportunities, potential, and threats. 👉 Showing the bigger picture and possible impact. 👉 Finding new ways to look at the market or other markets. 👉 Assigning new exciting projects. An open mindset, not tunnel vision. Working with a team of motivated people on the broader picture, trying to find connections or bundle things up. It's so crucial for a competitive industry like advertising. This way, you give more value to your partners, and the company keeps growing in different directions. This is what truly pushes the company and the people within the company to grow. #Business #Growth #Hiring

"The goal is to hire someone better than me." when I heard this from a manager during a 1-on-1 hiring review discussion, it was music to my ears! As managers, we may assume that we need to know everything and be experts in all areas within our team. For instance, a Marketing Leader might have a general understanding of content marketing, product marketing, social media marketing, and marketing design, but chances are they may not be an expert in each domain. To build a winning team, teams need the best people in their game! Although hiring someone better than oneself might seem obvious, it is frequently overlooked due to managers’ perceived insecurities, lack of trust, perceived threats to one's position, and a focus on competition rather than collaboration. Embracing the idea of hiring individuals who are more skilled in specific areas than the manager is crucial for creating a strong and competent team. I value well spoken and creative individuals. BUT to really thrive at work, hard work, discipline & humility is what I look for, while hiring teammates. Any sort of creation thrives on experimentation and iteration. By showing up each day, we give ourselves the space to try new things, explore different perspectives, and push those boundaries. Some days, our efforts may result in masterpieces, while other days we’re left with lessons and insights. Embracing both the successes and the challenges is an integral part of the journey. This applies to anybody who is trying to make a difference through their work; not just creative professionals. Focusing on these three things has helped me build a team of proactive and high agency individuals. #opportunity #work #team #hiring #beerbiceps

How i think we are going to build the best team in the agency space. We will/have a really strong vision. (Not gonna tell you the vision just yet) It is not a matter of hiring people to do a JOB. We hire people who want to spread a specific MESSAGE. And that’s going to affect the world in a specific way. And this is going to REWARD us in a specific way. That’s how you build a VISION and not a boring job.
