Congratulations to Olufunmilola Idowu, our Children & Families Social Worker, who won our March Star of the Month award ⭐ Team Manager, James Sheen, nominated Olu. He said "Olu successfully completed her Assessed and Supported Year in Employment in March having spent the year working as a Social Worker in the Pre-Birth Assessment team. Olu’s role involves her working with high-risk pregnant mothers, many of whom can be resistant to support from Social Services who they are often fearful of. Olu’s interventions with families have remained child focused but she has been able to work successfully in partnership with families to help reduce risks and improve outcomes for babies. Olu consistently goes above and beyond to support families, visiting families at their homes or in hospitals at unsociable hours to provide support or to ensure that families have the necessary finances, food, or items to get by." As part of Olu’s final report, she obtained feedback from three different mothers who commended Olu for the support that she had given to them. The 1st mother said: "Olu made me feel heard. She always remained very friendly and was consistent in building mine and my children’s trust – by doing so helped me open up to her about all my concerns and she was then able to get me the help I really needed. She was always very reassuring and warm and gave me a new view of social services.” The 2nd mother said: “Olu always listened and took her time to explain things in simple language, which was very helpful. Olu explained the process of the assessment to me and that is why everything went well and there was no stress. Olu didn’t only support me financially, but she supported me emotionally as she referred me for support." The 3rd mother said: "Olu picked me up from the hospital after delivery and helped pack my items when I was being moved by the social services from the hotel to a temporary accommodation. Olu was really supportive, aside for providing baby items, she provided advice and did everything with her heart not because this is her job.” The feedback is a true testament to Olu. Olu has a special aura about her which she exudes in the work that she does with families. Olu takes the time to build relationships and rapport with families and this enables her to help achieve positive outcomes for those families, even when there are challenging or high-risk circumstances. Olu clearly takes the time to understand the situations of the families she works with holistically and to ensure that the necessary support is in place in all areas.    On hearing the news of her win, Olu said Oprah Winfrey’s quote came to mind “I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”
