September 30 commemorating National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. https://lnkd.in/eRjjUNaK
A time to honor the experiences of Residential School Survivors and the children who never made it home.
September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day originating from the experiences of Residential School Survivor Phyllis Webstad. Before she was sent to St. Joseph Mission Residential School, Webstad’s grandmother brought her a bright orange shirt to wear on her first day. Upon arrival, Webstad was stripped of her orange shirt and forced to wear the school’s uniform. She never saw her orange T-shirt again. Webstad’s story became the catalyst for recognizing the experiences of Residential School Survivors, as well as the intergenerational harm residential schools have caused in Indigenous communities.
By wearing an orange shirt, we stand in solidarity with our Indigenous communities and the intergenerational trauma still felt today due to the harmful impact from the residential school system in our country’s history.
Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established after the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to facilitate recognition among former students, their families, their communities and all Canadians (Government of Canada, 2019). The TRC has traveled across Canada to bear witness to the testimony of Indian Residential School survivors and published a final report that included 94 Calls to Action. [1] https://lnkd.in/eAtVTCsq
An important first step towards reconciliation please take the time to read and understand the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action. Together, let us walk on the path of reconciliation.
