This might be an unpopular opinion: Any "non-technical" salesperson selling a technical product needs to be able to demo their own product without the help of an SE. I'm not saying we should hire technical experts as sales reps. But the most successful sales reps I've seen are the ones that take the time to deeply learn their product, the industry domain, and their prospects' daily lives. What's even harder is knowing how to flex that technical muscle without falling into a features/functionality rabbit hole. Many industrial manufacturers set themselves up to fail when they hire #technicalsales reps. 2nd SD sales talent is far more unusual than competent technical talent. Hire a hot-shot sales rep who can actually sell, and then teach them your technology. If you hire someone who has industry familiarity, knows the lingo, and understands the applications - it feels like the safe choice. Hiring "Technical Sales" almost invariably leads to mediocrity. Bold statement. I get it. I work with industrial manufacturers and capital equipment companies with technical products, long sell cycles, and knowledgeable buyers. It's standard practice to hire sales reps who have been in the industry, know the players, understand common applications, and have the lingo down pat. It's expected that reduces ramp up time. The only problem is that normally their sales skill is the ease with which they vomit up technical details. Rarely do they bring truly exceptional sales skill. A few companies are bold enough to hire to sales talent with an acceptable level of technical aptitude - but that's what's required to secure 2nd and 3rd standard deviation sales talent.
