6 weeks in – what I’ve learnt 6 weeks ago I left my busy Leeds Head Office job and set up JKC – my merchandise planning and consulting business. 6 weeks in here are a few things I’ve learnt.   #  The Linkedin community are a really encouraging and supportive bunch. I’ve had calls with strangers who have generously given me their valuable time to offer advice and encouragement   # Most good ideas come when you are not at your desk. Getting out and about every day is not only good for your wellbeing but also for your business.   #  Many people don’t know what merchandise planning is – “not quite, that’s visual merchandising – more to do with planning and analysis”.   # Explaining the relevance and benefits of retail merchandising to those who have never worked with a merchandiser is tricky. When you know you know!   #  Most people don’t reply to direct messages (I used to be one of those people).  Thank you to those who have.   # Don’t underestimate the power of your existing network. The people who have worked with you know your work and your worth.   There have been a few “down” days and unproductive days but most have been full of new people, businesses and challenges and I’m loving it!   If you are a product business and want to discover the benefits of retail merchandising in a flexible and affordable way, connect with me and we will take it from there.

Great opportunities

Made a whirlwind trip to nyc this weekend for the US Open (tennis, not golf - I prefer sports, not hobbies 😀). Bucket list awesomeness, but I suppose that’s for another social media platform that I’m not on. Anywho… made it into the new On store in Williamsburg. It’s a humble, pocket-sized store, but really well done. What’s to love? 1 - They invested at the product level. Don’t get me wrong, the space is nice and all, but the attention to detail at the fixture and merchandise level is what sells. Oftentimes too much puffery in the store design can detract from the product itself. 2 - People power. They have some badass associates working there. Peeps that know their product, love the brand, and are super personable and helpful. 3 - They intelligently considered operations. Those slide out shoe fixtures with sample sizes at the ready mean the associate is never leaving the customer during the sales process and creating an easier (and better) process for guest and associate. 4 - No screens. Well, actually, there were 3 tiny screens for info level, but they weren’t working (shocker, I know). 5 - They had some nicely integrated eco and performance oriented storytelling that added to the experience but didn’t overpower. It feels like On is finally starting to crack the nut on creating the right experience and design for expansion. *For tennis enthusiasts* I got the chance to see Ben Shelton best Tommy Paul in an incredible match, and Coco Gauff pull it out against Caroline Wozniacki - all while sipping on a Grey Goose Honey Deuce. I spent yesterday cruising along my old shopping turf (Chicago's Michigan Ave.), looking for examples of in-store experiences going well and those going - not so well. Two standouts 👇 : 🐴 Ralph Lauren (full disclosure - I worked at this location A LONG time ago and I'm a big fan girl) - visiting this store is an EXPERIENCE. 37,000 sq ft draped in old-world wood paneling and oriental rugs, it's akin to visiting a museum - the art is all part of Ralph's personal collection. The RL Restaurant has been a cornerstone of the upscale, see-and-be-seen crowd for a solid two decades now, and the brand recently expanded its reach towards aspirational shoppers by opening up a ground-floor Ralph's Coffee Shop (the place was PACKED on a cold, rainy Thursday afternoon). The window displays are grandiosely detailed in a calculated way that grabs attention, inviting the consumer in for more. Every inch of this store is well thought-out, visiting them is a treat. 🛍 Saks Fifth Avenue - Before I dump on another department store - Saks, I'm rooting for you! This was the place I bought my first luxury item, it holds a special place in my heart. But it was a truly awful experience. Uninspiring window displays, lackluster and unattentive sales staff, shoes strewn all over the footwear section, unbelievably messy bathrooms out of toilet paper, returns on the FOURTH floor. I was honestly shocked by how bad it was. I didn't even bother going all the way up to the top floor to check out the restaurant, it wasn't worth going up 7 flights of escalators. I will not be visiting again any time soon. #retail #luxury #retailinnovation
