The Lockhart Independent School District voters approved a Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) on Tuesday evening. According to the unofficial results, 59 percent of LISD voters supported the VATRE proposal. The VATRE approval secures $3 million for staff pay and districtwide school security enhancements. The VATRE’s approval also means the school tax rate will decrease from $1.1123 to $0.9569. With the simultaneous passage of Proposition 4, raising the homestead exemption to $100,000, the average LISD taxpayer will see a yearly tax savings of $496. “Lockhart ISD belongs to its voters, and we are immensely grateful for the support they have shown us,” Board President Michael Wright shared. “The VATRE’s approval is an affirmation of the value our community places on education and the incredible impact LISD staff make each day. Its passage signifies a resounding vote of confidence in our staff and the impact they’re making on students and families.” The $3 million from the VATRE will compensate for the district’s loss in state funding, which occurred following property value disputes between Caldwell County Appraisal District and the Texas Comptroller. The results of the election will be official once the LISD Board of Trustees canvasses the votes at a special meeting on November 20.
