Empowering women in agriculture, as exemplified by Bappan Mai, is crucial for addressing rural gender disparities and promoting fairness. A more inclusive and fair agricultural sector will play a key role in addressing food security challenge more effectively!

Today is the International Women’s Day 🙌🏼   Women account almost half of smallholder farmers in developing countries. But they face several barriers in their work… One of them is the lack of #land ownership. 🌱   In Colombia, the #Fairtrade certified farmer cooperative COOCENTRAL has tried to tackle this problem among its members. So, for the past 10 years, it has incentivized men to share land ownership with their wife. How? By paying higher #prices for coffee produced by women. ☕️   First, Coocentral offers women specific trainings in coffee #farm management. Then, the cooperative buys their high-quality #coffee and commercialize it to clients willing to pay a #premium. 🤝🏼 We met with Leonor and her husband, who have benefited from this initiative. They share ownership of their land, and Leonor appears as a member of Coocentral. Their son has now started to take over the management of the farm. 🇨🇴   At FairCapital, we applaud these initiatives taken by our partners! Do you have a daughter? Do you worry about her future? If so, you're not alone. Many of us fear that our daughters won't have the same opportunities as our sons. This is a valid concern because, even today, the world is still learning to treat everyone the same. But consider how far we've come already. From voting rights to breaking the glass ceiling, women are making strides in every field. In fact, the seaweed industry is a shining example of women's empowerment. Women already provide more than half of production and processing labour in countries like Tanzania. They're also taking the lead in innovative ventures, like the woman-led company ALGAplus in Portugal that's pioneering sustainable land-based seaweed farming. Can you imagine what the future might hold if we continue to fight for gender equality? Picture a world where your daughter's success is determined by her skills, her drive, and her passion, not her gender. A world where she can look to role models like the women of Câr-Y-Môr, a company where women outnumber men, and know that anything is possible. My daughter is growing up watching her mum and other women do amazing things. That's an incredible gift. Seeing women in leadership roles, especially in innovative fields like seaweed farming, will give her the confidence to pursue her own passions, whatever they may be. Let's all try to make the world fairer. Start with small things. Be kind and fair to everyone. Tell your daughter she can reach for the stars. Changing the world begins in our homes but can make everyone's future brighter. Together, we can create a world where our daughters have every opportunity to thrive. A world where their gender is a footnote, not a barrier.
