🌎 On June 5th, 1974, the world celebrated the first ever World Environment Day, established a few years earlier by the UN. That same year, Loacker moved its production to 1000 meters above sea level, high up in the mountains in Auna di Sotto, where the water is fresh and the air is pure ⛰️. Fifty years later, our main headquarters still stands in this beautiful location, with a stunning view of the Sciliar constantly urging us to make responsible choices for the environment and society. 🌱 It's been a month since the end of the 2023 Fresh Ventures Studio Program, an amazing experience that dove into the biggest challenges of the food systems. 🍀Thanks to this wonderful opportunity, I had the chance to conceive Fresh Stalls and to reinstate the relevance of direct and ethical relations between consumers and Regenerative Organic producers. Fresh Stalls aims at producing a positive impact by (re)imagining and co-crafting our food systems, while taking care of our environment, its people, their relations and knowledge. 🌍 During my regenerative journey, I encountered the Notte Verde festival (https://rb.gy/7luhy), curated by Casa delle Agriculture Tullia and Gino Odv (https://rb.gy/7vp9p), in sunny Salento, southern Italy. 👩🌾The 4-day long event is rich of meetings, talks and stories. Tiziana Colluto has brilliantly started the discussion by briefing on how the future of natural agriculture is linked to territories and communities, together with: Donato Nuzzo, coop. Agr. Casa delle Agriculture - Cooperation between farmers to strengthen production chains Luigi Coppola, Casa delle Agriculture Tullia and Gino Odv - Building alliances between farmers and other professional profiles Bianca Elzenbaumer, President by Brave New Alps - Creating community economies, the Alpine laboratory and The Academy of Community eleonora migno, COSPE Onlus - The protection of natural resources: becoming conscious farmers @Natale Reda, agronomist - Making agricultural production sustainable Giorgio Menchini, COSPE Onlus - There is no land without community that inhabits it 💡Coop. Casa delle Agriculture is a Mulino di Comunita' (community mill) in a small town called Castiglione D'Otranto. It is redefining collaborative solidarity networks based on a common interest in natural agriculture, seed-exchange and sharing practices. It activated GAP, a popular purchasing group, an alternative "market" of local organic products. It has also set up a biodiversity nursery and gardens 𝐕ivaio dell'Inclusione "𝐋𝐔𝐈𝐆𝐈 𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐒𝐎", as part of "BioDiverso" a regional project that selects and tests native crops, with Graziano Andrioli. 🌿While searching for positive triggers that force us to rethink the governance of food systems, Notte verde helps us fully understand the inner relevance between all actors and relations. 🤝 Let's not neglect practice, let's make it real. We spent time with Michele Manelli, owner and director of Salcheto Winery, who shared his story about his founding of Salcheto and, in effect, the rule book he through out to build his vision of winemaking. Starting from scratch he took a clean sheet approach (imagining how to reinvent the entire industry) to build a winery that is admirably sustainable. From their superb production facility, to their unique bottle design that is lighter and takes less energy to manufacture (and has a lower carbon footprint in shipping), to his focus on organic farming, to his approach to responsible packaging and, more broadly, his vision of a wholesome ecosystem of soil, natural water fall, cover cropping, insects, to the cultivation of a wide variety of naturally flowering plants, he has worked hard to create a winery that lives the values he espouses and demonstrably shows how to significantly reduce the environmental impact of his business. His efforts have raised the visibility of organic farming in winemaking and, in recent years, led to the formation of the Equalitas standard (https://www.equalitas.it), an organisation which: “…aims to promote the sustainability of the agrifood and wine supply chains, first and foremost, based on a vision and an approach tailored to bringing together businesses, society and the market.” Michele also discussed his concerns about modern farming techniques being overdone, and that they lose sight of the importance of organic and biodynamic methods that are proven to be a healthier and more responsible approach to quality winemaking. Yesterday, it was this lovable rogues 3rd birthday. He celebrated it by eating half a pack of cheese off a counter, adding to his lifetime carbon footprint which is estimated to be similar to that of a large SUV*. For most dogs, like humans, foods that contain meat or other animal products make up a large portion of carbon emissions due to their production, water use and land involved. And, at the risk of making myself popular with fellow canine owners, dogs actually (due to their size and consumption rate) have a larger footprint than cats or other smaller domestic pets. Less space and fewer resources in terms of accessories and care products means less impact. In the land of carbon accounting, size really does matter. However...Albus doesn't know anything about carbon footprints. He's more of an expert on fetching balls, belly rubs and making my daughter giggle. Which I'd say provides a fairly large net positive in other ways.
